A 2011-2012 Kentucky Fried Story

After we last saw our merry band of heroes early this year… the Colonel went Mad. Deranged, bat shit crazy, lunacy inducing, mouth frothing, raging Mad.

“It has been many years since I last won a title”

“I will hear no more of my suckage, of my drafting ineptitude and trading impotence from these degenerate, gambling, infidels! This will stand no longer!”

He tied the Broham to a tree, jailed Doug and Schottsie in his underground lair, kidnapped the Minister of Defense…. and LOCKED all the GMs in the land OUT of his glorious Kentucky Fried Game!

With the M.O.D. in tow, he ran off to his dark grimy fortress on lunatic hill.

There, inside. He hid.

As the summer grew and shone and left, his delusions were left to fester.

“I alone am best! I alone will win!”

His beard grew long and the sleepless nights from his rattled mind dotted his bulgy eyes with creepy red pellets. His cheeks scabbed and his balding scalp wilted. His unbearable ugliness increased by a factor of a HUNDRED THOUSAND!

For months the Minister of Defense subsisted on only carrots and string cheese. The nefarious Colonel restricted not only his food intake but alas, the very essence of the MoD’s being! Internet access was limited to five glorious minutes a day, and even then the Colonel only let him navigate on the Facebook, to the eternal anguish of the M.O.D.

But through months of mental and dietary torture, deprived of any news from his family or friends or the world at large, our dear Minister held fast:

“We will have a revolution”

“The Kentucky Fried Peoples will come for me. When the NBA preseason comes they will ask about my whereabouts. They will find you, Colonel, and they will free me.”

But summer turned to Fall and the days grew shorter, very slowly, over many months, and yet the NBA Preseason never came.

The eternal standoff between the recalcitrant Colonel and the unyielding MOD led to an impossible stalemate and a large blanket of nothingness slowly enveloped the Kentucky Fried land. L

After months of Kentucky Fried inactivity the sounds of silence grew strong. The GM’s of the Kentucky Fried land started to ask questions. Will there be a season? Why can’t I trade keepers?

Ciwasko and Mrobison sniffed something amiss. They followed the scent of a trail of renegade football spreads and landed upon the Schottsie. And Doug. And they soon led to the Broham. Who in turn showed them the whereabouts of the Colonel’s secret lair.

They quickly tricked the demented Colonel into releasing the MOD with a bag of Doritos and a Coca-Cola.

“I alone will win the Coca Cola! I will not trade you dear Doritos! Yummy!”

But months of depravation had weakened the Minister of Defense. His arthritic hands could hardly type.

“I can only bring a few leagues up at a time.”

“Perhaps there are some that are almost filled and the GMS can fill them and then we can draft those first”

“I see that the Greatest Show, the Johnnie Walker, the Travishamockery and the Crazy 88s are only a few teams away from being made whole”

“If they were full, we could start drafting towards the end of next week! We should be able to beat the NBA season for sure.”

Will the GMs of the Kentucky Fried land heed his weakened, beckoning call?

The Cyclone’s won their first Original Recipe title over the three time champion Trinidad All-stars in one of the biggest upsets in KF History under the guidance of famed GM YoungGod. Thankfully this historic win averted the Kentucky Fried apocalypse. Originally scheduled for May 22^nd.

The 16th Round is this Week

Kentucky Fried GMers:

With six weeks now in the books for the 2010-2011 season, the time has come to finish off this year’s drafts with our world renowned 16th round.

The Recap:

16th round picks will be assigned this evening (12/13) based on team record and points per game through the first six weeks.

The worst team’s 16th rounder will garner the 1st selection and the best team’s 16th rounder will be assigned the last selection.

Picks will be scheduled four times a day @ 9:00 AM, @ 1:00 PM, @ 5:00 PM and @ 9:00 PM Eastern Standard Time, from Wednesday (12/15) through Saturday (12/18).

REMEMBER:

Players that have not previously been drafted or acquired via the waiver wire will have 14th round resign rights for next season.

Players that have been previously drafted of acquired via the waiver wire will retain their original resign round.

And also remember:

Turkey Day is fast approaching and that can only mean one thing:

The 15th Round is finally here!

A quick review:

15th round picks will be assigned next Monday (11/22) afternoon based on team record and points per game through the first three weeks.

The worst team’s 15th rounder will garner the 1st selection and the best team’s 15th rounder will be assigned the last selection.

Picks will be scheduled four times a day @ 9:00 AM, @ 1:00 PM, @ 5:00 PM and @ 9:00 PM Eastern Standard Time, from Wednesday (11/24) through Saturday (11/27). So before you leave for the holiday weekend, check your team’s home page and verify when you pick!!!

All available free agents are eligible to be drafted in the 15th round.

Players that have not previously been drafted or acquired via the waiver wire will have 13th round resign rights for next season.

Players that have been previously drafted of acquired via the waiver wire will retain their original resign round.

Can you say that in the English?

If someone drops Randy Foye (7) in your league and you select him with your 15th round pick, he will still have the 7th round resign rights. (Not 13th).

But how can I tell?

You can’t! Just kidding… the Draft Applet shows player’s resign round, just be sure to verify there while queuing up prospects.

Don’t forget to review your draft queues as they will reflect whatever was left in there from the original draft!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Though the draft was scheduled to start at noon on Saturday, the draft room actually opened late evening on Friday. After harrasing a drunken schottsie he finally logged in and took the only player you can draft with the first pick. I promptly took Wade and draft was off, though at the grueling pace you would expect for a draft (not) progressing before dawn on a saturday.

At 2 AM Schottsie treats us all to following gem via our e-mail thread:

"Yeah between lebron shaq....fo real o fo fantasy but b4 punk jr smith and punk beeesley effed it up we used to rock th crip blood style" (i say sic sir, sic to the whole damn thing)

Somewhere between 10 and 11 am - the details are murky - Doug shakes the Kentucky Fried establishment by acquiring the 7th overall pick from Frenchlick. He celebrates with his an IPA.

At around 12:30, Doug again shakes the Kentucky Fried establishment by ignoring the sacrosanct KFBA rankings and selecting Kevin Durant. He celebrates with his fourth IPA. Says Doug "There's 1.100 upside here that no other player left on the board has." Tough to argue that call... I mean is there any way this guy doesn't score 30 points per game this year? We'll see. Regardless with his bible thumping center and OKC star, the Trinidad All-Stars immediately ursurp Ciwasko's Oscar Robertson as the pre-season fave.

By the 10th pick, Melo and Al Jefferson are also off the board, much to Ciwasko's dismay. He needs a guard, but pooh-poohs Tony Parker and Brandon Roy's career years. "Too many options in San Antonio. Andre Miller will have the ball in his hands." Only 10 picks in, its already clear "Upside" is going to be the theme of this draft.

The Brewers happily scoop up Dirk and the Colonel takes longer than he should to draft Bosh, the last top tier player left on the board. Oscar Robertson settles on Brandon Roy as his lead guard, making the choice pick of the second tier. Everyone else is left to fight over scraps.

Frenchlick sends San Juan into a tailspin by drafting Baron Davis one pick ahead of where they had planned to pick up the bouncy guard. I've been hyping him for 30 minutes now, so its kind of my fault.

San Juan ends up going with Elton Brand which leads into a prolonged discussion of whether Brand or Baron is a riskier pick (even though its very clearly Brand). Doug is shocked to discover Brand has only posted a 1.000 once in his career (or just as many times as Baron Davis) and we settle on a $5 bet one which will post a better average this season. This is the easiest $5 i will make all season.

Frenchlick doubles down on a Clipper season, and drafts super rook Blake Griffin. This is apparently the player San Juan was originally eyeing with the 3.1. So roeder has now coopted the Goatsuckers entire Clipper strategy. Maybe they'll fight a cage match to the death over Chris Kaman a few rounds from now. Seems like anything is possible at the moment.

Still smarting from a rare double Clipper vasectomy, a stung and disoriented Antonio takes uber punk JR Smith with the 1st pick of the 3rd round. Gotta say I like the Baron-Griffin combo better than Brand-JR, but Al Jefferson easily tips the scales in favor of the Goatsuckers.

Provo finally puts an end to Beasley's weed induced fall from grace, quickly proclaiming that with a little JCPeery TLC and few dozen cupcakes the young forward will be ready for a strong sophomore showing.

Fort Myers shocks the room by taking Derrick Rose with the 5th pick of the 3rd round. This is 31 picks ahead of where he was selected in the "Mock" draft and almost a full round ahead of where I projected Trinidad was going to take him (with the 4.2).

Doug talks me into taking Okafor with the 9th pick and though i debated selecting Aldridge at length, i find myself happy with this pick a week later. Three extra ppg can add almost 100 points to player's average and I have a feeling Chris Paul is going to do good things for his starting Centers throughout his career. Let's see how many easy lay-ups Tyson Chandler gets in Charlotte.

Continuing the obsession with upside Ciwasko jumps the gun on Al Horford, selecting him with 2nd pick of the 4th round. This was after i refused to trade him Okafor for which i was promply labeled a whore. My pre-draft strategy had been to select Al Horford with the very 1st pick of the 5th round had he been available, which seemed like a reasonable expectation. I'm not clear whether ciwasko knew i was on picking up a 2nd center and took Horford to punish the Brocheese or whether he still has his sights set on Okafor and figures that Horford will prove a handy trade chip later in the season. You know, given my man crush on the big Hawk and former Gator.

Centers go off the board like crazy and Bogut, Okur, JO and Nene all get taken. Brook Lopez, Brooklyn's fabulous keeper, remains my favorite center of the round.

Doug again convinces me on a selection, this time Rudy Gay. In my increasing state of intoxication i can't tell if he's manupulating me into a shitty team, and the Colonel clearly thinks he has ulterior motives. He is doug. Thats what doug does. Thing is that Rudy Gay was only marginally on my radar coming into the draft. Don't get me wrong, I love gay. He's got great potential and might be a great NBA player some day. Its just that Memphis, this year, is going to be an absolute Circus. With a capital C. Zach Randolph, Allen Iverson, a midling team no one comes to watch? Are you kidding me? That scene never works out. Players don't play through pain, sitting out with any minor bump or bruise. They get distracted, they go to southbeach, they get stoned. They start thinking about next season or get mired in coaching and trade controversies. Last year i stayed away from all Clips in all leagues for this very reason and it served me well. The year before that i stayed away from all Knicks in all leagues. And it served me well. But not this year. This year i took the plunge into what are sure to be six months worth of gut wrenching Memphis-is-a-joke articles and Allen Iverson tweets. And I am ok with that. I think.

T-Mac and Allen Iverson come off the board. I am mildly surprised as these guys weren't all that good last year and T-Mac is probably out for the year, but guards are riduculously scarce at this juncture and teams are in need. I'm sure they would have rather gambled on Tyrus Thomas, Gerald Wallace or Josh Howard. Right?

The guard situtation is so barren that Stephen Curry and Tereke Evans also come off the board. This is the 5th round people! Too much crack in the room.

I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if Big Z puts up another quite .867 this year and ends up being the best pick of the round hands down.

My strategy going into this draft was "Mine D'Antoni gold". This is the coach that turned David Lee and Nate Robinson into KF stars last season after all. Unheralded Knicks that could benefit from the DAntoni touch include Gallinari, Eddy Curry and Jordan Hill.

I even think Darko has himself a nice bit of D'Antoni upside this year.

I was hoping Hill (or Darko) would be an option with the 11.2, but now that MIke Miller has fallen into my lap, I have to take him. Why is everyone hating on this guy? He's a solid NBA player that's been stuck shooting for shitty teams going nowhere. Watch. This guy's going to compete and that means a .750.

Oscar Robertson jumps on Hill. Bastard! This will ultimately end up leaving me rookie-less for the draft.

With the first saturday in September arrives one of my most highly anticipated events of the year: The Original Recipe draft. Usually starting around noon and distintegrating by late evening (with the last few picks usually left for another day), the OR draft has now been held live over Labor Day weekend for a decade.

The stakes are high, and they are more than just pride. Though it must be said that no fantasy league title in any sport means as much to me as the coveted OR Championship, regardless of the fact that there are winnings to be had It's the league that not only spawned the Association, but also helped me connect with the joys of fantasy baskeball.

From its humble beginnings at the mostly inept fantasy hands of the Colonel's buddies, the league has evolved over the years into a tintillating mix of highly competive (and active) players from all over the world alongside some leftover wackos and deadbeats. Not every team behaves on a purely rational basis. Some GMs won't deal to maximize picks in keeper rounds or get value for first round talent even when they clearly should!

The quirks surrounding this rare mix of GMs are a key component of the league's unique personality. Once San Juan gets a hold of Tim Duncan, not else gets to field him. No matter what. Once the Colonel grows attached to his players, he's sticking with them come what may.

A look at some of these GMs and their strategies for the 2009-2010 season...

Schottsie's all LeBron all the time Strategy

Dating back to King Jame's first season when the NY Schottsies shocked the room by selecting the rookie with 16th and final pick of the 1st round, the team vowed to field LeBron every year for the rest of his storied career. To date they've kept good on Schottsie's word. By 2005, going into LeBron's sophomore campaign, the Schottsies needed the 8th overall pick to select him and by 2006 the were forced to obtain, through hook or crook, the very 1st pick of the draft. For four straight seasons the LeBron strategy has required NY to decimate the team's draft board in order to place themselves in the coveted pole position required to draft James. Though we were all skeptical Schottsie's strategy could work, last season it almost won him all the marbles. New York combined LeBron's league leading 1.238 average with an improbable supporting cast to reach the championship game - where they lost by a mere 7 points.

Schottsie made up for his distressed draft board with some deft picks.

Having given up NY's 2nd rounder in his ever lasting quest for LeBron, Schottsie did not take his next player until the 8th pick of the 3rd round! With it however, he took a calculated chance on Shaq. Coming off a 61 game, career worst .921 season Shaq was on a clear downward trend, playing out the tail of his career and a good bet to continue his decline. Instead he was rejuvinated by PHO magical pixie dust and he suited up for 75 games and posted a robust 1.014 on the season.

In the middle of the 4th round (with his 3rd overall selection) Schottsie again went high risk/high reward with a talented but troubled youngster, Mr. Michael Beasley. He was then able to parlay Beasley (.867), whose 2nd round rights were keeper valued this year (until about a week ago), into a package of prospects that netted Kevin Durant (.946) for the stretch run.

And the Schottsie's weren't done yet. They selected Stephen Jackson, who posted a career high .876, in the 5th round, and had the forsite to draft Drew Gooden (.857) in the 8th and Nate Robison (.906) in the 9th.

So encouraged was Schottsie by last year's results that he's taking another stab at his LeBron strategy this season. Leveraging a handful of keepers and his 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th round picks, the Schottsies have acquired the 1st overall selection (for LeBron) and the 16th (to keep Shaq). They intend to retain the rights to Drew Gooden (in the 6th round) and Jarret Jack (14h). The rest of the rotation will be made up by the 87th, 99th, 107th, 138th and 139th picks.

Seems like an unlikely plan to me, but Schottsie is roaring with confidence and has already proved us all wrong once.

The Ciwasko

The basic tenets of the Ciwasko strategy (though he has never confessed them to me personally) go something like this:

1) First rounder talent matters above all else.

2) You need four of five of them to win a title.

3) The two ways to acquire 1st round talent are to A) Draft one and B) trade one for quality keepers mid-season

4) It is hard to draft great keepers in the mid rounds (3rd to the 7th) for two reasons A) They must perform spectacularly to be considered good grabs two rounds above where they are selected (1st through 5th), and B) Keeper differentials peak throughout these rounds making it much harder to get projectable players from the available talent pool (relative to draft position) than in the later rounds

5) You optimize the draft by moving up at the top as much as possible, forfeighting mid-round picks for keepers and accumulating selections in the late rounds.

6) And perhaps his most important: Points are disproportionately weighted into the KF Avg and as such you should favor gunners, shooters and scoring leaders whenever possilbe. Punks with bad attidues that ruin team chemistry are just bonus. (What are the chances JR Smith doesn't end up on this team???)

Though they remain title-less, the Ciwasko strategy has worked out well for his Crispus Attucks Tigers for three seasons: consecutive 13-3 regular season records followed by a 10-6, resulting in a championship defeat and two first round playoff exits respectively. It has only been felled by the injury gods and his inability to resist the temptation of drafting bad seeds.

In '06 (arguably their best season) the Attucks Tigers managed to acquire THREE first round selections. With the 9th pick they took Melo, with the 10th Iverson and with the 12th Gilbert Arenas. They did not pick again until the 4th round (where they took Sheed). That year they lost the title thanks to a stacked Provo Jomegamen team (proly one of the best in OR history) and the final game implosions of Sheed (.597) and Iverson (.798). Yep.

In '07 the Attucks Tigers got a hold of two first rounders (they took Melo, again, with the 7th pick and JO with the 8th), a mid-second rounder (Magette) and the 1st pick of the 3rd (Joe Johnson). They also took some solid keeper gambles in the later rounds on two players heading into their "breakout" 3rd season - Marvin Williams in the 8th and Danny Granger in the 9th. One turned to coal and on turned to gold. The team averaged 211 ppg, but was overcome in the 1st round when both JO and Chris Bosh (acquired in exchange for the keeper rights to josh smith) both succumbed to injury. Radoslav Nesterovic, needless to say, was not able to pick up the slack.

In '08 the Attucks Tigers again paired two first rounders (Al Jefferson with the 9th pick and Gilbert Arenas with the 13th) with a slew of star keepers (Butler in the 3rd, Gay in the 4th and Danny Granger in the 7th). Alas Arenas and Al Jefferson both missed almost the entire season and the team was lucky to stumble to a 10-6 record in a weak conference.

But fret not Oscar Robertson fans for Ciwasko is back for another shot this season. With 5th round rights to Danny Granger, the 10th overall ranked player in the association and hands down the best keeper in the OR, the Attucks Tigers were arguably the best positioned team heading into the draft. To that Mr. Ciwasko has already added the 10th and 13th overall picks and some solid upside 8th round keepers - Anthony Randolp and Jeff Green.

The Champ

Yes he was there at the beginning. Only the Colonel and Schottsie have played as many seasons. Still the scoreboard reads Doug "three" and everyone else "one" or "zero". The 15 other teams have combined for "seven". At this point we should just admit that whether his success is the product of luck or talent (my guess is a lot of both) he's got what it takes to bring home Kentucky Fried gold.

The Trinidad All-Star GM actually outlined his basic principles for winning four years ago here.

As a quick recap they were:

1) Don't play favorites

2) Healthy Players make Happy Owners

3) Beware of Rookies

4) Drafting your 2nd center is not a high priority

5) Take the late rounds seriously

6) Your general manager duties don't end with the draft

I'll let you read the high minded drivel he dished on these six principles in his own words, but I have three key elements he left off his list that his team's historical record offers us:

1) Draft for next season not last year - The key component to Doug's success is his ability to not be swayed by previous numbers and to take guys that will perform better in the coming year. It's a remarkable talent. Just last year, what turned into a rebuilding season for renown All-Stars, he selected Kevin Durant in the 2nd (who turned in a .946 and will be a 1st round selection this season), Tony Parker late in the 2nd (who turned in an improbable .979 and will be a 1st round selection this season) and two of the years best KF Rookies, Kevin Love and Russell Westbrook in the 6th and 7th respectively. Had his team gained momentum early, he would have gotten two 1st round performers out of two 2nd round picks (I can't do justice to how much harder this is than it sounds) and had some solid keepers to bolster his team.

2) Don't grow attached to the players or the team - When things weren't going Trinidad's way, Doug didn't hesitate to pull the plug. He dealt his top players early, impacting the whole league (Tony Paker and Kevin Durant ended up playing on opposite sides of the championship game), and getting his pickings from the leagues top keepers. This season his team returns with Rondo (8), Bargnani (8) and Calderon (10), players that can not only round out his rotation to start the season, but also chips that can be cashed in for top level talent if he wants to stock up for a a 4th title run.

3) A fair trade is a bad trade - Doug does not do a deal unless he believes he's fleecing the other GM. Honestly he just doesn't. We know this. Which of course begs the question - Why does anyone ever accept a trade with Doug?

The Mercenaries

These guys don't spend to much time worrying about pre-draft positioning or next season. But they draft from the entire player pool, and have no qualms about taking the guys no one else wants. Zach Randolph and Charlie Villanueva end up on their teams. Give them Kobe any day. Eddy Curry. Back in the day they would take Karl Malone. Or Sam Cassell. Or Latrell Sprewell. Nowadays they'd be happy to build a Carlos Boozer and Michael Beasly frontline. Add a little Jermaine O"neal in for good measure. Karma be damned. They scour the waiver wire for over performing malcontents no one wants. And then when they sense weakness in another GM, they pounce!; peddling their bad apples as aged fruit and stealing their opponents cheese. That's right. They steal your cheese!

To date I count two OR titles that have gone the way of the Mercs. The 2001 title that Antonio's San Juan Supersonics (then known as the Baboons) took and the 2007 title JCPeery's Provo Jomegamen walked away with after a perfect season.

I don't have the data for the 2001 season handy (does anyone?) But its easy to look back at the 2007 season and marvel at JCPeery's mercenary masterpiece.

Provo took Kobe in the 1st, Marcus Camby in the 2nd and Zach Randolph with the 1st pick of the 3rd. I'm not even kidding. You can look it up,

Kobe posted a 1.106. Camby played the entire season and posted a .917. Randolph had a career high 1.052 - his only four digit showing to date.

Peery followed that up with Sean May (also in the 3rd) and Richard Hamilton (4th).

He then took Eddy Curry in the 5th as well as Randy Foye. Bargnani in the 6th. Grant Hill in the 7th. JJ Reddick in the 8th. With no picks in the 9th, 10th, 11th or 12th - he wrapped the live draft up with Flip Murray in the 13th and Sean Marks in the 14th.

Who could root for that team? Only it's mother.

Three weeks into the season he turned the first pick of the 15th round (which i believe was originally ZZRay's) into Kevin Martin - one of the best 15th round selections in Association history. He later selected Matt Barnes with his own 15th rounder.

Eight weeks into the season he swindled a stumbling Frenchlick squad worried about missing the postseason into taking Foye (3) and Eddy Curry (3) in exchange for an injured Chris Paul and an injured Yao. Both returned later in the season.

Ten weeks into the season the Jomegamen parlayed Martin (13) and Barnes (13) into Steve Nash and Elton Brand.

Along the way he sprinkled the likes of Jalen Rose and Al Harrington on his shiny new superstars.

Voila. Unstoppable force.

The Rebuilders

Well imagine how you would feel if you had this squad.

Teams that decide to go for the title and blow their keeper load, come back to a pretty awful picture.

Straight draft picks? Ouch.

Best thing is to do is take some chances. Swing for the fences. As NY, Trinidad and Provo have proved there is gold to mine in every round. It possible to pick a championship team from scratch.

And if not, its possible to restock in a single season as long as you decide early, have solid stars to offer and hold out for the best keepers.

But you have to pay attention and stay active or the windows of opportunity will pass you by.

The Systemizers

The systemizers all about the numbers. These are the statgeeks that bypass hype, hoopla, and NBA knowledge in favor of unfiltered data (i.e. past performance). They use calculations and formulas to value, rate and draft players. Then they sit back and wait for the results to come in. They don't watch the games or read ESPN's daily articles. They don't like and dislike players or have opinions on how trades, FA signings and rookies will effect output. Ugh! Talk about taking the fun out of Kentucky Fried Basketball.

The strategy peaked in 2004 - before mid-season keeper trading and pre-draft positioning became the norm, giving an inherent advantage to more active GMs - when the Brooklyn Brewers defeated the NorthHampton Nittany Nerds in a sad, sad, sad championship game that culminated in a 168.8 to 168.0 final score. Ugh!

Last year we saw the mini-resurgence of the systemizers as NorthHampton shook up the genre by incorporating an early-season keeper for star trade (Calderon (10) for Tony Parker) that helped propel them to the title.

Hopefully the comeback of their ilk is short lived.

The Deadbeats

Yeah they know who they are. And they proly won't read this anyway. They are the obstacle course around which the rest of the league must navigate, unavailable to respond to trade requests or update their rosters, they stumble towards mediocrity, fielding postseason teams that aren't good enough to compete and loser bracket participants that fail to restock with future assets.

And those my friends are some of components that make up the Original Recipe.

I also see the 2nd pick of the round is M.I.A. but in the end life is what it is and no more and as such these data files are no more than illusions of what we think they are. And we think there was no 2nd pick.

Talk about Deja Birdman. Who would have thought back in '03 that Chris Andersen would be considered an excellent 14th round keeper again six years?

The Brocheese displayed incredible forsight with the selection of Gerald Wallace. Sadly it was way before his time (and prime).

So there you have it. The 14th rounder is pretty much worthless. At least in an Original Recipe league that drafts two months before the start of the season, over labor weekend. In a drunken stupor.

With the notable exception of Rudy Fernandez (Greatest Show), even the keepers suck. Adam Morrison? Ouch.

The best generally available, recurring picks, appear to be Mareese Speights and Darrell Arthur (each selected on five occasions).

Robin Lopez was a pretty nice gamble (Turnpike, Sugar Ray, J-Dub) as were Javalee McGee (Travisham) and Mario Chalmers (Crazy 88s)

Otherwise over the top suckitude pretty much prevailed thoughout.

I don't even know who Richard Hendrix is.

Welcome to the fourth and final installment of our August 2009 Rankings reivew.

"Player valuations are based on the indefatigable work of 8 veteran Kentucky Fried GMs (myself included). Running out of steam after a week of non-stop e-mails flooding into our inbox we nevertheless persevered through 240 picks (15 rounds) to equip GMs worldwide with some semi-reasonable selection pools to peruse when their leagues draft over the next two months.

The available player pool in the 13th, 14th and 15th rounds was as bad as would be expected 200 picks into an NBA league that usually features about 240 rotation guys.

This was mostly about fishing for prospects - of few of which might miracurously turn into homeruns, most of which would end up making little KF impact. Sprinkled in were some mid .600 heavy minute stalwarts that can be counted on to prop up the back end of a rotation when your starters are down and out...

Since these late rounds are highly subjective, getting eight opinions (instead of one or two) was extremely valuable and I'd like to take a quick second to thank the GMs that graciously participated.

Because of this very high degree of subjectivity though, and in spite of the fact that i mocked many of their picks through the first 12 rounds, i decided to go back to well and ask these GMs for their reasoning behind giving their particular selections a coveted top 240 grand prixe position.

My take: David Thorpe twittered various random observations throughout the summer league.

He clearly walked away impressed with Beaubois: "Beaubois see's things." (Hopefully not dead people).

"Beaubois has been the best pure pg I've seen this summer."

"Beaubois reminds people of Tony Parker. He just airballed a 10 foot jumper. Even so, I'm not ready to say that yet. But he's lightning."

"Beaubois is both quick and crafty."

Had mixed reviews on Robin's Lopez: "Robin Lopez can be an excellent player. Does he want to be?"

"Lopez, like most young bigs, has no plan in the post when he has the ball."

"I'd be excited about the 15 and 14 Lopez has, but Nathan Jawai is not as good as most centers in the pac-10."

And took only cursory note of Mike Taylor: "Mike Taylor is incredibly quick."

(While we're at it Thorpe did offer some interesting notes on the last two picks of the 12th round: DeMar Derozan (drafted by ZZ Ray) - "Demar DeRozan has yet to do anything. Barely touched the ball.", "DeRozan with the lob dunk!", "MM:Demar Derozan really comes off the curl with speed, balance and elevation-very controlled.", "Will come off a decades worth of pindowns", "Derozan is going to have lots of unproductive mins. No worries. He's going to be fine." - and George Hill (Selected by DLBass) - "George Hill just had a monster dunk, but it was the least impressive play of the sequence. He set up the entire set by talking to his guys.", "George Hill was the 2nd worst player of all the first rounders last summer. He's fantastic now. Credit him, and his organization.".)

"Gerald Henderson - Projecting rookies is always a crap-shoot. But Henderson is headed to a team starved for scoring, and lacking an established shooting guard. When picking rookies, I tend to favor those who have a chance to play 20+ minutes a game, an opportunity Henderson will have in Charlotte. Besides, even with Larry Brown as the coach, someone on the Bobcats has to be KFBA relevant (and I'm betting that it will not be Tyson Chandler).

Kosta Koufos - Kosta put up a respectible .785 in his rookie year, albeit in limited minutes. There was even an impressive three-week stretch of at least 31 minutes and a .915 average. If he is able to get consistent minutes with the Jazz or another team this year, he could be an intriguing prospect.

Josh Boone - Boone has shown flashes in his three years, but has never been worthy of starting status in the KFBA. I am betting that the subtraction of Ryan Anderson will ensure that Boone gets more consistent minutes and the subtraction of Vince Carter will ensure that he (along with the entire Nets squad) gets a few additional shots.

Channing Frye - Frye teased all KFBA GM's in 2005-06, putting up an eye-popping .848 as a rookie. As with any tease, we haven't even sniffed the goods since. But, Frye is moving to a new team, where he has a chance for a fresh start. Some GM might be pleasantly surprised if he finally starts living up to that rookie potential. In the 14th round, someone with an .848 upside is all more than you can ask for.

BJ Mullens - Quality centers are difficult to come by in KFBA. Mullens has, by far, the most KFBA potential of any center in this draft class and, in my expert opinion, is worthy a late round pick. Mullens could be your C1 in a couple years, while Thabeet will be the next DeSagana Diop.

Janero Pargo - Unlike most 15th rounders, this pick is based on value, not potential. Pargo is intriguing because of his potential to step in and be a 3rd/4th guard on most KFBA rosters this year. Pargo will be the 4th guard in the Bulls rotation and should see 15-20 minutes a game. His KFaverages in his last stint in Chicago (.737-.765) suggest that he may be more valuable than guards such as Rip Hamilton, Raymond Felton or Jason Richardson, who are likely to be taken in the mid-rounds. "

My take: Tough to argue with any of DLBass' picks. I agree that Pargo could be a nice value selection, but his best case scenario is still just .750 and a starting spot on an NBA squad (as bestowed on Rip, Felton and Richardson) is unlikely.

Frye's not just getting another chance on a new team, he's getting another chance on a run & gun team that has produced many a KF impact player. Recall that the Knicks were entirely disfunctional under Isaiah Thomas, and that the Blazers had a slew of solid big men competing for minutes.

Boone certainly has the rebounding rate for a decent KF Average (12.6 boards per 48 last season), but his attrocious 38% shooting from the free throw line makes his name a difficult one to call upon for an NBA coach.

"Tayshaun Prince was, by leaps and bounds, the best basketball player left. Someday his skills will translate into numbers, right? Note that I likely wouldn't take him in an actual draft because I'm taking upside in the latter rounds, but any 200-plus player "ranking" should include him.

Yeah, I took Jason Smith because I'm a total Sixers homer, but I also heard some draftnik say if he were available for the 2009 draft, he would have gone in the lottery. So what the hell?

Tererence Williams was a 2009 lottery pick, and, in my view, all lotto rookies should all be off the board by the end of the 13th. Except for Thabeet. Because he's a puss.

I picked Dragic because he put up sneaky good numbers for a somewhat maligned rookie, and I took Belinelli because I like his upside, especially in Toronto, where he might compete for a starting spot."

My take: Its always the averages that attract GMs (like flies to maneur) but minutes are the other half of the equation - or at least a minimum number of minutes. If you had taken every player in the KFBA last season and awarded him a starting slot and then taken the average weekly score (also known as APS or Average Points per Start), Tayshaun Prince would have ranked 130th at 23.70. So let me restate this - Tayshaun Prince was the 130th best peforming player last season by the only stat that ultimately counts (KF Avg * (Min 36, Weekly Min Played). So I think 206 is a pretty good spot to pick him up and there's an outside chance that he sees a slight uptick in weekly average with Sheed, Dyes and Billups now gone.

Eddy Curry… Did you hear that Eddy Curry lost fifty pounds? And his heart (which was two sizes too small) is now huge?! I hear he’s going to be the main man for the Knicks this year, and that Santa Claus is real… Seriously though, Eddy has been working out – and he’s doing what the Knicks tell him to do… He’ll get some burn this year – even if it’s just a ruse by the Knicks to shop him around…

Jamaal Tinsley… Back in the League? Deserves a chance from NBA & KFBA GMs…

Primoz Brezec… Sweet shooting big man used to be good… Now he’s back on a veteran minimum contract for a team (Philly) that desperately needs what he’s got…

Renaldo Balkman… Has always delivered KF goodness, but never gets the respect… Can he turn his athleticism into offensive talent? If he does, he’ll get minutes on a high scoring Denver squad…

Darren Collision… He is the reason Jrue Holiday had such bad numbers in college… He played four years at ucla and made many final fours. Up tempo player on a up tempo team…"

My take: Far as I know nobody's signed up for the Jamaal Tinsley comeback as of yet. Of course, news that an NBA team did commit to giving him a chance would likely propel his draft stock above the 14th round.

Primoz Brezec might be a sweet shooting big man but his lifetime KF Average stands at a less than stellar .685:

"Tyson Chandler has had a dissappointing career, plays on a bum toe and missed half of NOK's regular season last year but... He's still one of just 30 starting centers in the NBA and the two seasons previous to last year he posted a .733 and .754 respectively thanks to double digit rebounding per game numbers.

At the time of this selection I thought Amir Johson had a shot at becoming Milwaukee's starting PF. Did not know he would be Chris Bosh's towel boy. Still the much overhyped prospect had himself an .807 year before last season (in almost as many minutes) and is just 22 years old.

What to make of Ike Diogu? He's had stellar averages his entire KF career (.792, .861, .952, .906) but NBA coaches have conspired to reward him with ever decreasing minutes (996, 729, 276, 202). Still I think the expectation in NOK will be that as David West's back-up he will fill the exact same post-up big man role while he's on the floor. Another high average, low minute season seems to be in the offing, though hopefully he can get more than 10 minutes per game.

O'Bryant had himself a disappointing summer league, but is still an upside play at just 23 years of age:

DJ White sported an .857 his rookie season (in just 7 games) and carries the blessing of the master drafters of OKC. His summer league went OK, but the limited minutes per game are probably a sign of how far down the rotation management sees his role in the upcoming season:

Brian Cook's already on his 3rd team and hardly saw the floor after heading to Houston (2.4 mpg) where he might not have meshed well with the tough man front court that is now the team's signature. Still someone will have to score/shoot in Houston and Cook has a .716 lifetime average. Seems like a decent gamble this late."

"Courtney Lee, like everyone on NJN this year, has a "sky is the limit" / "eat what you kill" opportunity in their "can anyone besides Harris and Lopez score?" system.

Sean May sucks but there are worse players to pick up at this point than ones who have been good, albeit in short stretches, previously.

Ricky Rubio would have been selected way before this if i hadn't been in a drunken stupor the last few rounds and realized he was still on the board.

Jason Maxiell is at least a decent player in real life - with a major shakeup in DET theres always the chance something strange and good happens for those who are left behind.

Brendan Haywood seems like the most boring pick ever until week 10 when your star C1 does down and you realize that your C2 and C3 are from African and Eastern European countries you never heard of and have a combined 30min PT on the year - at that point he doesn't look so bad. Its nice to have a reliable .700-.750 for a week in an emergency.

Wayne Ellington will be a good real life NBA player. He might not have a 50% chance of being an average KFBA player, but he does have a 10% chance of being great in both and being looked at as a draft steal for years to come."

My take: Rubio is a great value in the 14th round and likely won't last that long in real drafts. Even if he doesn't play (or maybe especially if he doesn't) you will get decent keeper trade-in value for Rubio (12). On the flip side its important to note this move kills a roster spot. Its like owning a 16th rounder that never matures.

Haywood was hurt all of last season and mostly forgotten but the promise of NBA starter minutes at the Center slot should indeed make him an attractive pickup in the later rounds, whence his ilk become increasingly rare. Remember the mock did not take position into account, but every team will try to walk away from the actual draft with at least three centers.

"Generally speaking, I tried to pick conservatively per the colonel's instructions. I probably wouldn't draft Collison or Hughes myself unless I desparately needed a player with minutes in that position.

Humphries - He's a strong rebounder, built for the KFBA scoring system. Posted .800+ in each of the past two years in limited minutes. He's been one of your (and my) sleepers for a long time. Still waiting for him to wake up, but worth the gamble.

Darko - A wise KF oracle (the Broham) once said that he couldn't imagine how Darko would fail to post .800+ in the 2006(?) season. Seriously though, centers are valuable - even ones who post .700. He's still young, and if he's going to succeed anywhere, it will be in D'Antoni's system.

Collison - He was a conservative pick. He's going to get decent minutes. He's only 28. It was only a year ago that he posted a .784. And mrobison traded Joe Johnson for Collison not too long ago (and vehemently defended his decision to do so). In short, he's a decent roster filler who could serve as an F4 with pretty certain minutes.

Larry Hughes - Similar to Collison, he's going to get minutes, isn't completely past his prime, and is capable of big KF numbers. Remember when he was a 2nd round pick in Washington?

Martell Webster - So talented, but nothing to show for it yet. He's only 22. If he gets traded from Portland, I can see him exploding. Maybe I'm a dreamer. Anyway, worth the gamble.

Gerald Green - Also so talented, but with decent KF numbers in limited minutes. The real problem with him is his attitude and failure to develop his game. Dallas is probably his last shot. Again worth the gamble."

My take: The Colonel is a burly, temperamental, hermit of man with strong fascist tendendicies who consistently tried to stomp out the free market spirit of our ranking system with obnoxious comments like "Since this is a mock draft to be used as the default rankings – do not reach for players… Take the player that MUST be taken… Let the users reach for potential on their own…"; "Pick the @$$hole… I have Randolph too in another league and probably won’t pick him here… Let’s see where he goes…" ; "Yeah, don’t take guys you have as keepers…"; "McGrady might not play next year… Not sure if he’s the pick here… Though at some point, he & Yao have value as keepers for the following year… Can you repick and we’ll let McGrady keep sliding a bit further?"; "And since the late rounds are hard to predict, we should lay out the potential picks in an order that makes sense... Actual KFAvg past performance for veteran players... Actual NBA draft ordering for new players..." and "Remember – no outside monies, liquors, or misc favors may be included in KFBA trade proposals…", and of course much huffing and puffing about not much of anything as is his usual want. And he calls this a game! More like an ode to central planning.

As for Ciwasko's picks I agree that if Darko is to ever post that mythical .800 I thought he had in him it will be for D'Antoni. He is, incredibly, still just 24 years of age. But at the same time, this is his 4th team and if he doesn't break through now, its just not going to happen.

Humphries remains a perennial super sleeper (whom I believe has been selected in the 11th round of the OR draft four years running). As far as I'm concerned he will stay there as long as he continues to post the juicy averages in limited minutes... but I'm afraid its going to be tough for him get rotation level playing time on a team that lists Dirk, Shawn Marrion, Josh Howard, Drew Gooden and Tim Thomas on its roster. Might be another year at the end of the bench for our favorite 6'8" KF player.

Gerald Green and Martell Webster are quintesential Ciwasko picks. Athletic wings who as uber talents have been much hyped for their potential but have not yet delivered. Two summers ago he selected Marvin Williams and Danny Granger with the 1st two picks of the 9th round. Today Granger is the best keeper in the OR and Williams is projected as an 11th rounder. Net-net, I'd say he go a good return for his investment.

And remember, in the immortal words of the Colonel:

"We’re drafting certainty – for our default draft list! If someone let their team be auto-drafted, they should expect mediocracy!"

"Varejao provides depth at forward and has a decent chance to surpass .700 - all you can ask for in the 13th round.

JRue - This late i usually go for young guys with potential. In an ideal world JRue could become the go-to scorer in Philly's second unit; he's supposed to be a selfish ballhog which bodes well for his kfba average (hello zach randolph!)

Austin Daye - He's looked surprisingly good in summer league and could post a .750 backing up Charlie and Tayshaun.

Julian Wright - Here's where desperation sets in; maybe, just maybe he has a breakout season ala Boris Diaw in him.

Ersan Ilyasova - When i picked him i thought Amir would pick up minutes at PF for Milwaukee. Now that he's gone Ersan should actually be the first big off the bench. Definetely worth a 14th round pick and will probably start for some "all keeper" teams by the end of the year.

Donte Green - Sacramento's team is worse than ever so anybody with a semblance of talent should get minutes. Donte probably won't do much with them but he'll look good waving a towel at the end of the bench. "

My take: Donte Green shot a miserable 29% from the field over the course of five games at the Vegas summer league and David Thorpe actually accused him of being the player that had most regressed from last year over his Twitter feed.

Two years removed from a .726, 941 minute rookie season, Ilyasova returns after a brief stint with FC Barcelona. The giant Turk is still just 22 years old.
