Thought I'd do a round by round "retro" diary of OR draft. Why not?

Though the draft was scheduled to start at noon on Saturday, the draft room actually opened late evening on Friday. After harrasing a drunken schottsie he finally logged in and took the only player you can draft with the first pick. I promptly took Wade and draft was off, though at the grueling pace you would expect for a draft (not) progressing before dawn on a saturday.

At 2 AM Schottsie treats us all to following gem via our e-mail thread:

"Yeah between lebron shaq....fo real o fo fantasy but b4 punk jr smith and punk beeesley effed it up we used to rock th crip blood style" (i say sic sir, sic to the whole damn thing)

Somewhere between 10 and 11 am - the details are murky - Doug shakes the Kentucky Fried establishment by acquiring the 7th overall pick from Frenchlick. He celebrates with his an IPA.

At around 12:30, Doug again shakes the Kentucky Fried establishment by ignoring the sacrosanct KFBA rankings and selecting Kevin Durant. He celebrates with his fourth IPA. Says Doug "There's 1.100 upside here that no other player left on the board has." Tough to argue that call... I mean is there any way this guy doesn't score 30 points per game this year? We'll see. Regardless with his bible thumping center and OKC star, the Trinidad All-Stars immediately ursurp Ciwasko's Oscar Robertson as the pre-season fave.

By the 10th pick, Melo and Al Jefferson are also off the board, much to Ciwasko's dismay. He needs a guard, but pooh-poohs Tony Parker and Brandon Roy's career years. "Too many options in San Antonio. Andre Miller will have the ball in his hands." Dirk is clearly the top player left on the board, but ciwasko turns out to be a diggler hater (or an Amar'e new apostrophe lover?) and goes with the goggled Sun instead. Only 10 picks in, its already clear "Upside" is going to be the theme of this draft.

The Brewers happily scoop up Dirk and the Colonel takes longer than he should to draft Bosh, the last top tier player left on the board. Oscar Robertson settles on Brandon Roy as his lead guard, making the choice pick of the second tier. Everyone else is left to fight over scraps.

The first few picks of the 2nd round prove more difficult.

Oaskterdam's GM struggles mightily to choose his poison and eventually settles on Randolph.

ZZRay eventually decides on Gilbert over homeboy Vince Carter.

Frenchlick sends San Juan into a tailspin by drafting Baron Davis one pick ahead of where they had planned to pick up the bouncy guard. I've been hyping him for 30 minutes now, so its kind of my fault.

San Juan ends up going with Elton Brand which leads into a prolonged discussion of whether Brand or Baron is a riskier pick (even though its very clearly Brand). Doug is shocked to discover Brand has only posted a 1.000 once in his career (or just as many times as Baron Davis) and we settle on a $5 bet one which will post a better average this season. This is the easiest $5 i will make all season.

Frenchlick doubles down on a Clipper season, and drafts super rook Blake Griffin. This is apparently the player San Juan was originally eyeing with the 3.1. So roeder has now coopted the Goatsuckers entire Clipper strategy. Maybe they'll fight a cage match to the death over Chris Kaman a few rounds from now. Seems like anything is possible at the moment.

Still smarting from a rare double Clipper vasectomy, a stung and disoriented Antonio takes uber punk JR Smith with the 1st pick of the 3rd round. Gotta say I like the Baron-Griffin combo better than Brand-JR, but Al Jefferson easily tips the scales in favor of the Goatsuckers.

Provo finally puts an end to Beasley's weed induced fall from grace, quickly proclaiming that with a little JCPeery TLC and few dozen cupcakes the young forward will be ready for a strong sophomore showing.

Fort Myers shocks the room by taking Derrick Rose with the 5th pick of the 3rd round. This is 31 picks ahead of where he was selected in the "Mock" draft and almost a full round ahead of where I projected Trinidad was going to take him (with the 4.2).

Doug talks me into taking Okafor with the 9th pick and though i debated selecting Aldridge at length, i find myself happy with this pick a week later. Three extra ppg can add almost 100 points to player's average and I have a feeling Chris Paul is going to do good things for his starting Centers throughout his career. Let's see how many easy lay-ups Tyson Chandler gets in Charlotte.

Continuing the obsession with upside Ciwasko jumps the gun on Al Horford, selecting him with 2nd pick of the 4th round. This was after i refused to trade him Okafor for which i was promply labeled a whore. My pre-draft strategy had been to select Al Horford with the very 1st pick of the 5th round had he been available, which seemed like a reasonable expectation. I'm not clear whether ciwasko knew i was on picking up a 2nd center and took Horford to punish the Brocheese or whether he still has his sights set on Okafor and figures that Horford will prove a handy trade chip later in the season. You know, given my man crush on the big Hawk and former Gator.

Centers go off the board like crazy and Bogut, Okur, JO and Nene all get taken. Brook Lopez, Brooklyn's fabulous keeper, remains my favorite center of the round.

Doug again convinces me on a selection, this time Rudy Gay. In my increasing state of intoxication i can't tell if he's manupulating me into a shitty team, and the Colonel clearly thinks he has ulterior motives. He is doug. Thats what doug does. Thing is that Rudy Gay was only marginally on my radar coming into the draft. Don't get me wrong, I love gay. He's got great potential and might be a great NBA player some day. Its just that Memphis, this year, is going to be an absolute Circus. With a capital C. Zach Randolph, Allen Iverson, a midling team no one comes to watch? Are you kidding me? That scene never works out. Players don't play through pain, sitting out with any minor bump or bruise. They get distracted, they go to southbeach, they get stoned. They start thinking about next season or get mired in coaching and trade controversies. Last year i stayed away from all Clips in all leagues for this very reason and it served me well. The year before that i stayed away from all Knicks in all leagues. And it served me well. But not this year. This year i took the plunge into what are sure to be six months worth of gut wrenching Memphis-is-a-joke articles and Allen Iverson tweets. And I am ok with that. I think.

And then I took Yao.

Or so Doug convinced me. Puff, puff, pass and all that.

As of now I'm expecting Yao (3) to be worth some major keeper currency come january and as along as i can secure me some top shelf talent I'll be thrilled. But i'm going to be nervous until then.

The Colonel picks up Iggy, whom i had stared at longingly twice in the previous five picks. Personally I think this was a great pick-up at the 5.2.

Then everyone goes crazy.

T-Mac and Allen Iverson come off the board. I am mildly surprised as these guys weren't all that good last year and T-Mac is probably out for the year, but guards are riduculously scarce at this juncture and teams are in need. I'm sure they would have rather gambled on Tyrus Thomas, Gerald Wallace or Josh Howard. Right?

The guard situtation is so barren that Stephen Curry and Tereke Evans also come off the board. This is the 5th round people! Too much crack in the room.

I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if Big Z puts up another quite .867 this year and ends up being the best pick of the round hands down.

Ciwasko gives up Jeff Green (8) for the 1st pick of the 6th round and proceeds to take OJ Mayo. In case you started reading this blog mid way, we're drafting for upside. Still Oscar Robertson is looking good with Amare, Granger, and Anthony Randolph at forward and Brandoy Roy, Correy Maggette and OJ Mayo at guard. A nice mix of front line talent and talent with front line potential.

The Schottsie's, anticipating they will draft seven rookies in what is left of this draft, decide to add the veteran presence of Eric Gordon with what amounts to their first pick since the 1st round.

Younggod somehow gets Shawn Marrion with the 7.2 even though he's clearly 6th round worthy.

San Juan takes Harden and the Colonel picks up Johnny Flynn, who i was confident would be around for the 8.1. The lesson: Rookies always go early. They are sexy.

For my money, Oaksterdam's Randy Foye will end up a better selection that both though.

Two picks later i'm widely mocked for taking Sammy Dalembert, but I don't have a back-up center, centers are about to get scarce and he had a down year and has mid .700s potential. What's Ray Allens potential? Or Al Thorton's?

Ladies and gentlemen Hasheem Thabeet! I have a feeling he's going to follow in the harrowed footsteps of all those other number two picks with midling KF careers... Marvin Williams, Tyson Chandler, Darko Milicic... and note that he went before all of those players! This season will be the last time that happens.

For Myers adds a solid back up guard in Kirk Hinrich, a very nice pick-up this late.

ZZray drafts DeJuan Blair's ACL-Less knees. For what its worth i think he ends up posting the highest kf average out of this round. And it might not even be close.

Brooklyn, ZZ's, Frenchlick and New York clean out the young guards with upside leaving Cupey and Grandview to draft retreads Flip Murray and Marquis Daniels. Ouch. Nothing says "I'm so trashed i've lost touch with reality" quite like drafting undersized journey men shooting guards that have never posted a .700 in their career and never will.

My strategy going into this draft was "Mine D'Antoni gold". This is the coach that turned David Lee and Nate Robinson into KF stars last season after all. Unheralded Knicks that could benefit from the DAntoni touch include Gallinari, Eddy Curry and Jordan Hill.

I even think Darko has himself a nice bit of D'Antoni upside this year.

I was hoping Hill (or Darko) would be an option with the 11.2, but now that MIke Miller has fallen into my lap, I have to take him. Why is everyone hating on this guy? He's a solid NBA player that's been stuck shooting for shitty teams going nowhere. Watch. This guy's going to compete and that means a .750.

Oscar Robertson jumps on Hill. Bastard! This will ultimately end up leaving me rookie-less for the draft.

Some nice upside picks go in this round.

I take Eddy Curry with the 10th pick of the round, my last, and promtly pass out.

- a couple of nice pick-ups for Trinidad at the top of the 12th - Jerryd Bayless and Demar Derozan

- a good gamble by Schottsie with the 13.1 in Ike Diogu

- some deep sleepers in Robin Lopez and DJ White selected in the 13th by ZZRay and Ciwasko respectively.

- a grab bag of rookies picked up by the Schottsies throughout the last three rounds.

Still kind of surprised Darrell Arthur didn't get picked up until the 14th round.

Original Recipe Draft coming at you live!

With the first saturday in September arrives one of my most highly anticipated events of the year: The Original Recipe draft. Usually starting around noon and distintegrating by late evening (with the last few picks usually left for another day), the OR draft has now been held live over Labor Day weekend for a decade.

The stakes are high, and they are more than just pride. Though it must be said that no fantasy league title in any sport means as much to me as the coveted OR Championship, regardless of the fact that there are winnings to be had It's the league that not only spawned the Association, but also helped me connect with the joys of fantasy baskeball.

From its humble beginnings at the mostly inept fantasy hands of the Colonel's buddies, the league has evolved over the years into a tintillating mix of highly competive (and active) players from all over the world alongside some leftover wackos and deadbeats. Not every team behaves on a purely rational basis. Some GMs won't deal to maximize picks in keeper rounds or get value for first round talent even when they clearly should!

The quirks surrounding this rare mix of GMs are a key component of the league's unique personality. Once San Juan gets a hold of Tim Duncan, not else gets to field him. No matter what. Once the Colonel grows attached to his players, he's sticking with them come what may.

A look at some of these GMs and their strategies for the 2009-2010 season...

Schottsie's all LeBron all the time Strategy

Dating back to King Jame's first season when the NY Schottsies shocked the room by selecting the rookie with 16th and final pick of the 1st round, the team vowed to field LeBron every year for the rest of his storied career. To date they've kept good on Schottsie's word. By 2005, going into LeBron's sophomore campaign, the Schottsies needed the 8th overall pick to select him and by 2006 the were forced to obtain, through hook or crook, the very 1st pick of the draft. For four straight seasons the LeBron strategy has required NY to decimate the team's draft board in order to place themselves in the coveted pole position required to draft James. Though we were all skeptical Schottsie's strategy could work, last season it almost won him all the marbles. New York combined LeBron's league leading 1.238 average with an improbable supporting cast to reach the championship game - where they lost by a mere 7 points.

Schottsie made up for his distressed draft board with some deft picks.

Having given up NY's 2nd rounder in his ever lasting quest for LeBron, Schottsie did not take his next player until the 8th pick of the 3rd round! With it however, he took a calculated chance on Shaq. Coming off a 61 game, career worst .921 season Shaq was on a clear downward trend, playing out the tail of his career and a good bet to continue his decline. Instead he was rejuvinated by PHO magical pixie dust and he suited up for 75 games and posted a robust 1.014 on the season.

In the middle of the 4th round (with his 3rd overall selection) Schottsie again went high risk/high reward with a talented but troubled youngster, Mr. Michael Beasley. He was then able to parlay Beasley (.867), whose 2nd round rights were keeper valued this year (until about a week ago), into a package of prospects that netted Kevin Durant (.946) for the stretch run.

And the Schottsie's weren't done yet. They selected Stephen Jackson, who posted a career high .876, in the 5th round, and had the forsite to draft Drew Gooden (.857) in the 8th and Nate Robison (.906) in the 9th.

So encouraged was Schottsie by last year's results that he's taking another stab at his LeBron strategy this season. Leveraging a handful of keepers and his 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th round picks, the Schottsies have acquired the 1st overall selection (for LeBron) and the 16th (to keep Shaq). They intend to retain the rights to Drew Gooden (in the 6th round) and Jarret Jack (14h). The rest of the rotation will be made up by the 87th, 99th, 107th, 138th and 139th picks.

Seems like an unlikely plan to me, but Schottsie is roaring with confidence and has already proved us all wrong once.

The Ciwasko

The basic tenets of the Ciwasko strategy (though he has never confessed them to me personally) go something like this:

1) First rounder talent matters above all else.

2) You need four of five of them to win a title.

3) The two ways to acquire 1st round talent are to A) Draft one and B) trade one for quality keepers mid-season

4) It is hard to draft great keepers in the mid rounds (3rd to the 7th) for two reasons A) They must perform spectacularly to be considered good grabs two rounds above where they are selected (1st through 5th), and B) Keeper differentials peak throughout these rounds making it much harder to get projectable players from the available talent pool (relative to draft position) than in the later rounds

5) You optimize the draft by moving up at the top as much as possible, forfeighting mid-round picks for keepers and accumulating selections in the late rounds.

6) And perhaps his most important: Points are disproportionately weighted into the KF Avg and as such you should favor gunners, shooters and scoring leaders whenever possilbe. Punks with bad attidues that ruin team chemistry are just bonus. (What are the chances JR Smith doesn't end up on this team???)

Though they remain title-less, the Ciwasko strategy has worked out well for his Crispus Attucks Tigers for three seasons: consecutive 13-3 regular season records followed by a 10-6, resulting in a championship defeat and two first round playoff exits respectively. It has only been felled by the injury gods and his inability to resist the temptation of drafting bad seeds.

In '06 (arguably their best season) the Attucks Tigers managed to acquire THREE first round selections. With the 9th pick they took Melo, with the 10th Iverson and with the 12th Gilbert Arenas. They did not pick again until the 4th round (where they took Sheed). That year they lost the title thanks to a stacked Provo Jomegamen team (proly one of the best in OR history) and the final game implosions of Sheed (.597) and Iverson (.798). Yep.

In '07 the Attucks Tigers got a hold of two first rounders (they took Melo, again, with the 7th pick and JO with the 8th), a mid-second rounder (Magette) and the 1st pick of the 3rd (Joe Johnson). They also took some solid keeper gambles in the later rounds on two players heading into their "breakout" 3rd season - Marvin Williams in the 8th and Danny Granger in the 9th. One turned to coal and on turned to gold. The team averaged 211 ppg, but was overcome in the 1st round when both JO and Chris Bosh (acquired in exchange for the keeper rights to josh smith) both succumbed to injury. Radoslav Nesterovic, needless to say, was not able to pick up the slack.

In '08 the Attucks Tigers again paired two first rounders (Al Jefferson with the 9th pick and Gilbert Arenas with the 13th) with a slew of star keepers (Butler in the 3rd, Gay in the 4th and Danny Granger in the 7th). Alas Arenas and Al Jefferson both missed almost the entire season and the team was lucky to stumble to a 10-6 record in a weak conference.

But fret not Oscar Robertson fans for Ciwasko is back for another shot this season. With 5th round rights to Danny Granger, the 10th overall ranked player in the association and hands down the best keeper in the OR, the Attucks Tigers were arguably the best positioned team heading into the draft. To that Mr. Ciwasko has already added the 10th and 13th overall picks and some solid upside 8th round keepers - Anthony Randolp and Jeff Green.

The Champ

Yes he was there at the beginning. Only the Colonel and Schottsie have played as many seasons. Still the scoreboard reads Doug "three" and everyone else "one" or "zero". The 15 other teams have combined for "seven". At this point we should just admit that whether his success is the product of luck or talent (my guess is a lot of both) he's got what it takes to bring home Kentucky Fried gold.

The Trinidad All-Star GM actually outlined his basic principles for winning four years ago here.

As a quick recap they were:

1) Don't play favorites

2) Healthy Players make Happy Owners

3) Beware of Rookies

4) Drafting your 2nd center is not a high priority

5) Take the late rounds seriously

6) Your general manager duties don't end with the draft

I'll let you read the high minded drivel he dished on these six principles in his own words, but I have three key elements he left off his list that his team's historical record offers us:

1) Draft for next season not last year - The key component to Doug's success is his ability to not be swayed by previous numbers and to take guys that will perform better in the coming year. It's a remarkable talent. Just last year, what turned into a rebuilding season for renown All-Stars, he selected Kevin Durant in the 2nd (who turned in a .946 and will be a 1st round selection this season), Tony Parker late in the 2nd (who turned in an improbable .979 and will be a 1st round selection this season) and two of the years best KF Rookies, Kevin Love and Russell Westbrook in the 6th and 7th respectively. Had his team gained momentum early, he would have gotten two 1st round performers out of two 2nd round picks (I can't do justice to how much harder this is than it sounds) and had some solid keepers to bolster his team.

2) Don't grow attached to the players or the team - When things weren't going Trinidad's way, Doug didn't hesitate to pull the plug. He dealt his top players early, impacting the whole league (Tony Paker and Kevin Durant ended up playing on opposite sides of the championship game), and getting his pickings from the leagues top keepers. This season his team returns with Rondo (8), Bargnani (8) and Calderon (10), players that can not only round out his rotation to start the season, but also chips that can be cashed in for top level talent if he wants to stock up for a a 4th title run.

3) A fair trade is a bad trade - Doug does not do a deal unless he believes he's fleecing the other GM. Honestly he just doesn't. We know this. Which of course begs the question - Why does anyone ever accept a trade with Doug?

The Mercenaries

These guys don't spend to much time worrying about pre-draft positioning or next season. But they draft from the entire player pool, and have no qualms about taking the guys no one else wants. Zach Randolph and Charlie Villanueva end up on their teams. Give them Kobe any day. Eddy Curry. Back in the day they would take Karl Malone. Or Sam Cassell. Or Latrell Sprewell. Nowadays they'd be happy to build a Carlos Boozer and Michael Beasly frontline. Add a little Jermaine O"neal in for good measure. Karma be damned. They scour the waiver wire for over performing malcontents no one wants. And then when they sense weakness in another GM, they pounce!; peddling their bad apples as aged fruit and stealing their opponents cheese. That's right. They steal your cheese!

To date I count two OR titles that have gone the way of the Mercs. The 2001 title that Antonio's San Juan Supersonics (then known as the Baboons) took and the 2007 title JCPeery's Provo Jomegamen walked away with after a perfect season.

I don't have the data for the 2001 season handy (does anyone?) But its easy to look back at the 2007 season and marvel at JCPeery's mercenary masterpiece.

Provo took Kobe in the 1st, Marcus Camby in the 2nd and Zach Randolph with the 1st pick of the 3rd. I'm not even kidding. You can look it up,

Kobe posted a 1.106. Camby played the entire season and posted a .917. Randolph had a career high 1.052 - his only four digit showing to date.

Peery followed that up with Sean May (also in the 3rd) and Richard Hamilton (4th).

He then took Eddy Curry in the 5th as well as Randy Foye. Bargnani in the 6th. Grant Hill in the 7th. JJ Reddick in the 8th. With no picks in the 9th, 10th, 11th or 12th - he wrapped the live draft up with Flip Murray in the 13th and Sean Marks in the 14th.

Who could root for that team? Only it's mother.

Three weeks into the season he turned the first pick of the 15th round (which i believe was originally ZZRay's) into Kevin Martin - one of the best 15th round selections in Association history. He later selected Matt Barnes with his own 15th rounder.

Eight weeks into the season he swindled a stumbling Frenchlick squad worried about missing the postseason into taking Foye (3) and Eddy Curry (3) in exchange for an injured Chris Paul and an injured Yao. Both returned later in the season.

Ten weeks into the season the Jomegamen parlayed Martin (13) and Barnes (13) into Steve Nash and Elton Brand.

Along the way he sprinkled the likes of Jalen Rose and Al Harrington on his shiny new superstars.

Voila. Unstoppable force.

The Rebuilders

Well imagine how you would feel if you had this squad.

Teams that decide to go for the title and blow their keeper load, come back to a pretty awful picture.

Straight draft picks? Ouch.

Best thing is to do is take some chances. Swing for the fences. As NY, Trinidad and Provo have proved there is gold to mine in every round. It possible to pick a championship team from scratch.

And if not, its possible to restock in a single season as long as you decide early, have solid stars to offer and hold out for the best keepers.

But you have to pay attention and stay active or the windows of opportunity will pass you by.

The Systemizers

The systemizers all about the numbers. These are the statgeeks that bypass hype, hoopla, and NBA knowledge in favor of unfiltered data (i.e. past performance). They use calculations and formulas to value, rate and draft players. Then they sit back and wait for the results to come in. They don't watch the games or read ESPN's daily articles. They don't like and dislike players or have opinions on how trades, FA signings and rookies will effect output. Ugh! Talk about taking the fun out of Kentucky Fried Basketball.

The strategy peaked in 2004 - before mid-season keeper trading and pre-draft positioning became the norm, giving an inherent advantage to more active GMs - when the Brooklyn Brewers defeated the NorthHampton Nittany Nerds in a sad, sad, sad championship game that culminated in a 168.8 to 168.0 final score. Ugh!

Last year we saw the mini-resurgence of the systemizers as NorthHampton shook up the genre by incorporating an early-season keeper for star trade (Calderon (10) for Tony Parker) that helped propel them to the title.

Hopefully the comeback of their ilk is short lived.

The Deadbeats

Yeah they know who they are. And they proly won't read this anyway. They are the obstacle course around which the rest of the league must navigate, unavailable to respond to trade requests or update their rosters, they stumble towards mediocrity, fielding postseason teams that aren't good enough to compete and loser bracket participants that fail to restock with future assets.

And those my friends are some of components that make up the Original Recipe.

I see a handful of players that likely won't be drafted in any round this year. (I'm looking at yous Goran Dragic, Hamed Haddadi and Sasha Vujacic.)

I also see the 2nd pick of the round is M.I.A. but in the end life is what it is and no more and as such these data files are no more than illusions of what we think they are. And we think there was no 2nd pick.

Hilario a great pick-up by the All-Stars. Though they would have had to keep him for half a decade to get a full season out of him.

Talk about Deja Birdman. Who would have thought back in '03 that Chris Andersen would be considered an excellent 14th round keeper again six years?

The Brocheese displayed incredible forsight with the selection of Gerald Wallace. Sadly it was way before his time (and prime).

So there you have it. The 14th rounder is pretty much worthless. At least in an Original Recipe league that drafts two months before the start of the season, over labor weekend. In a drunken stupor.

With the notable exception of Rudy Fernandez (Greatest Show), even the keepers suck. Adam Morrison? Ouch.

The best generally available, recurring picks, appear to be Mareese Speights and Darrell Arthur (each selected on five occasions).

Robin Lopez was a pretty nice gamble (Turnpike, Sugar Ray, J-Dub) as were Javalee McGee (Travisham) and Mario Chalmers (Crazy 88s)

Otherwise over the top suckitude pretty much prevailed thoughout.

I don't even know who Richard Hendrix is.

Reviewing the Rankings Mock - Final Three

Welcome to the fourth and final installment of our August 2009 Rankings reivew.

"Player valuations are based on the indefatigable work of 8 veteran Kentucky Fried GMs (myself included). Running out of steam after a week of non-stop e-mails flooding into our inbox we nevertheless persevered through 240 picks (15 rounds) to equip GMs worldwide with some semi-reasonable selection pools to peruse when their leagues draft over the next two months.

The available player pool in the 13th, 14th and 15th rounds was as bad as would be expected 200 picks into an NBA league that usually features about 240 rotation guys.

This was mostly about fishing for prospects - of few of which might miracurously turn into homeruns, most of which would end up making little KF impact. Sprinkled in were some mid .600 heavy minute stalwarts that can be counted on to prop up the back end of a rotation when your starters are down and out...

Since these late rounds are highly subjective, getting eight opinions (instead of one or two) was extremely valuable and I'd like to take a quick second to thank the GMs that graciously participated.

Because of this very high degree of subjectivity though, and in spite of the fact that i mocked many of their picks through the first 12 rounds, i decided to go back to well and ask these GMs for their reasoning behind giving their particular selections a coveted top 240 grand prixe position.

My take: David Thorpe twittered various random observations throughout the summer league.

He clearly walked away impressed with Beaubois: "Beaubois see's things." (Hopefully not dead people).

"Beaubois has been the best pure pg I've seen this summer."

"Beaubois reminds people of Tony Parker. He just airballed a 10 foot jumper. Even so, I'm not ready to say that yet. But he's lightning."

"Beaubois is both quick and crafty."

Had mixed reviews on Robin's Lopez: "Robin Lopez can be an excellent player. Does he want to be?"

"Lopez, like most young bigs, has no plan in the post when he has the ball."

"I'd be excited about the 15 and 14 Lopez has, but Nathan Jawai is not as good as most centers in the pac-10."

And took only cursory note of Mike Taylor: "Mike Taylor is incredibly quick."

(While we're at it Thorpe did offer some interesting notes on the last two picks of the 12th round: DeMar Derozan (drafted by ZZ Ray) - "Demar DeRozan has yet to do anything. Barely touched the ball.", "DeRozan with the lob dunk!", "MM:Demar Derozan really comes off the curl with speed, balance and elevation-very controlled.", "Will come off a decades worth of pindowns", "Derozan is going to have lots of unproductive mins. No worries. He's going to be fine." - and George Hill (Selected by DLBass) - "George Hill just had a monster dunk, but it was the least impressive play of the sequence. He set up the entire set by talking to his guys.", "George Hill was the 2nd worst player of all the first rounders last summer. He's fantastic now. Credit him, and his organization.".)

"Gerald Henderson - Projecting rookies is always a crap-shoot. But Henderson is headed to a team starved for scoring, and lacking an established shooting guard. When picking rookies, I tend to favor those who have a chance to play 20+ minutes a game, an opportunity Henderson will have in Charlotte. Besides, even with Larry Brown as the coach, someone on the Bobcats has to be KFBA relevant (and I'm betting that it will not be Tyson Chandler).

Kosta Koufos - Kosta put up a respectible .785 in his rookie year, albeit in limited minutes. There was even an impressive three-week stretch of at least 31 minutes and a .915 average. If he is able to get consistent minutes with the Jazz or another team this year, he could be an intriguing prospect.

Josh Boone - Boone has shown flashes in his three years, but has never been worthy of starting status in the KFBA. I am betting that the subtraction of Ryan Anderson will ensure that Boone gets more consistent minutes and the subtraction of Vince Carter will ensure that he (along with the entire Nets squad) gets a few additional shots.

Channing Frye - Frye teased all KFBA GM's in 2005-06, putting up an eye-popping .848 as a rookie. As with any tease, we haven't even sniffed the goods since. But, Frye is moving to a new team, where he has a chance for a fresh start. Some GM might be pleasantly surprised if he finally starts living up to that rookie potential. In the 14th round, someone with an .848 upside is all more than you can ask for.

BJ Mullens - Quality centers are difficult to come by in KFBA. Mullens has, by far, the most KFBA potential of any center in this draft class and, in my expert opinion, is worthy a late round pick. Mullens could be your C1 in a couple years, while Thabeet will be the next DeSagana Diop.

Janero Pargo - Unlike most 15th rounders, this pick is based on value, not potential. Pargo is intriguing because of his potential to step in and be a 3rd/4th guard on most KFBA rosters this year. Pargo will be the 4th guard in the Bulls rotation and should see 15-20 minutes a game. His KFaverages in his last stint in Chicago (.737-.765) suggest that he may be more valuable than guards such as Rip Hamilton, Raymond Felton or Jason Richardson, who are likely to be taken in the mid-rounds. "

My take: Tough to argue with any of DLBass' picks. I agree that Pargo could be a nice value selection, but his best case scenario is still just .750 and a starting spot on an NBA squad (as bestowed on Rip, Felton and Richardson) is unlikely.

Frye's not just getting another chance on a new team, he's getting another chance on a run & gun team that has produced many a KF impact player. Recall that the Knicks were entirely disfunctional under Isaiah Thomas, and that the Blazers had a slew of solid big men competing for minutes.

Boone certainly has the rebounding rate for a decent KF Average (12.6 boards per 48 last season), but his attrocious 38% shooting from the free throw line makes his name a difficult one to call upon for an NBA coach.

"Tayshaun Prince was, by leaps and bounds, the best basketball player left. Someday his skills will translate into numbers, right? Note that I likely wouldn't take him in an actual draft because I'm taking upside in the latter rounds, but any 200-plus player "ranking" should include him.

Yeah, I took Jason Smith because I'm a total Sixers homer, but I also heard some draftnik say if he were available for the 2009 draft, he would have gone in the lottery. So what the hell?

Tererence Williams was a 2009 lottery pick, and, in my view, all lotto rookies should all be off the board by the end of the 13th. Except for Thabeet. Because he's a puss.

I picked Dragic because he put up sneaky good numbers for a somewhat maligned rookie, and I took Belinelli because I like his upside, especially in Toronto, where he might compete for a starting spot."

My take: Its always the averages that attract GMs (like flies to maneur) but minutes are the other half of the equation - or at least a minimum number of minutes. If you had taken every player in the KFBA last season and awarded him a starting slot and then taken the average weekly score (also known as APS or Average Points per Start), Tayshaun Prince would have ranked 130th at 23.70. So let me restate this - Tayshaun Prince was the 130th best peforming player last season by the only stat that ultimately counts (KF Avg * (Min 36, Weekly Min Played). So I think 206 is a pretty good spot to pick him up and there's an outside chance that he sees a slight uptick in weekly average with Sheed, Dyes and Billups now gone.

Eddy Curry… Did you hear that Eddy Curry lost fifty pounds? And his heart (which was two sizes too small) is now huge?! I hear he’s going to be the main man for the Knicks this year, and that Santa Claus is real… Seriously though, Eddy has been working out – and he’s doing what the Knicks tell him to do… He’ll get some burn this year – even if it’s just a ruse by the Knicks to shop him around…

Jamaal Tinsley… Back in the League? Deserves a chance from NBA & KFBA GMs…

Primoz Brezec… Sweet shooting big man used to be good… Now he’s back on a veteran minimum contract for a team (Philly) that desperately needs what he’s got…

Renaldo Balkman… Has always delivered KF goodness, but never gets the respect… Can he turn his athleticism into offensive talent? If he does, he’ll get minutes on a high scoring Denver squad…

Darren Collision… He is the reason Jrue Holiday had such bad numbers in college… He played four years at ucla and made many final fours. Up tempo player on a up tempo team…"

My take: Far as I know nobody's signed up for the Jamaal Tinsley comeback as of yet. Of course, news that an NBA team did commit to giving him a chance would likely propel his draft stock above the 14th round.

Primoz Brezec might be a sweet shooting big man but his lifetime KF Average stands at a less than stellar .685:

At the time of this selection I thought Amir Johson had a shot at becoming Milwaukee's starting PF. Did not know he would be Chris Bosh's towel boy. Still the much overhyped prospect had himself an .807 year before last season (in almost as many minutes) and is just 22 years old.

What to make of Ike Diogu? He's had stellar averages his entire KF career (.792, .861, .952, .906) but NBA coaches have conspired to reward him with ever decreasing minutes (996, 729, 276, 202). Still I think the expectation in NOK will be that as David West's back-up he will fill the exact same post-up big man role while he's on the floor. Another high average, low minute season seems to be in the offing, though hopefully he can get more than 10 minutes per game.

O'Bryant had himself a disappointing summer league, but is still an upside play at just 23 years of age:

DJ White sported an .857 his rookie season (in just 7 games) and carries the blessing of the master drafters of OKC. His summer league went OK, but the limited minutes per game are probably a sign of how far down the rotation management sees his role in the upcoming season:

Brian Cook's already on his 3rd team and hardly saw the floor after heading to Houston (2.4 mpg) where he might not have meshed well with the tough man front court that is now the team's signature. Still someone will have to score/shoot in Houston and Cook has a .716 lifetime average. Seems like a decent gamble this late."

"Courtney Lee, like everyone on NJN this year, has a "sky is the limit" / "eat what you kill" opportunity in their "can anyone besides Harris and Lopez score?" system.

Sean May sucks but there are worse players to pick up at this point than ones who have been good, albeit in short stretches, previously.

Ricky Rubio would have been selected way before this if i hadn't been in a drunken stupor the last few rounds and realized he was still on the board.

Jason Maxiell is at least a decent player in real life - with a major shakeup in DET theres always the chance something strange and good happens for those who are left behind.

Brendan Haywood seems like the most boring pick ever until week 10 when your star C1 does down and you realize that your C2 and C3 are from African and Eastern European countries you never heard of and have a combined 30min PT on the year - at that point he doesn't look so bad. Its nice to have a reliable .700-.750 for a week in an emergency.

Wayne Ellington will be a good real life NBA player. He might not have a 50% chance of being an average KFBA player, but he does have a 10% chance of being great in both and being looked at as a draft steal for years to come."

My take: Rubio is a great value in the 14th round and likely won't last that long in real drafts. Even if he doesn't play (or maybe especially if he doesn't) you will get decent keeper trade-in value for Rubio (12). On the flip side its important to note this move kills a roster spot. Its like owning a 16th rounder that never matures.

Haywood was hurt all of last season and mostly forgotten but the promise of NBA starter minutes at the Center slot should indeed make him an attractive pickup in the later rounds, whence his ilk become increasingly rare. Remember the mock did not take position into account, but every team will try to walk away from the actual draft with at least three centers.

"Generally speaking, I tried to pick conservatively per the colonel's instructions. I probably wouldn't draft Collison or Hughes myself unless I desparately needed a player with minutes in that position.

Humphries - He's a strong rebounder, built for the KFBA scoring system. Posted .800+ in each of the past two years in limited minutes. He's been one of your (and my) sleepers for a long time. Still waiting for him to wake up, but worth the gamble.

Darko - A wise KF oracle (the Broham) once said that he couldn't imagine how Darko would fail to post .800+ in the 2006(?) season. Seriously though, centers are valuable - even ones who post .700. He's still young, and if he's going to succeed anywhere, it will be in D'Antoni's system.

Collison - He was a conservative pick. He's going to get decent minutes. He's only 28. It was only a year ago that he posted a .784. And mrobison traded Joe Johnson for Collison not too long ago (and vehemently defended his decision to do so). In short, he's a decent roster filler who could serve as an F4 with pretty certain minutes.

Larry Hughes - Similar to Collison, he's going to get minutes, isn't completely past his prime, and is capable of big KF numbers. Remember when he was a 2nd round pick in Washington?

Martell Webster - So talented, but nothing to show for it yet. He's only 22. If he gets traded from Portland, I can see him exploding. Maybe I'm a dreamer. Anyway, worth the gamble.

Gerald Green - Also so talented, but with decent KF numbers in limited minutes. The real problem with him is his attitude and failure to develop his game. Dallas is probably his last shot. Again worth the gamble."

My take: The Colonel is a burly, temperamental, hermit of man with strong fascist tendendicies who consistently tried to stomp out the free market spirit of our ranking system with obnoxious comments like "Since this is a mock draft to be used as the default rankings – do not reach for players… Take the player that MUST be taken… Let the users reach for potential on their own…"; "Pick the @$$hole… I have Randolph too in another league and probably won’t pick him here… Let’s see where he goes…" ; "Yeah, don’t take guys you have as keepers…"; "McGrady might not play next year… Not sure if he’s the pick here… Though at some point, he & Yao have value as keepers for the following year… Can you repick and we’ll let McGrady keep sliding a bit further?"; "And since the late rounds are hard to predict, we should lay out the potential picks in an order that makes sense... Actual KFAvg past performance for veteran players... Actual NBA draft ordering for new players..." and "Remember – no outside monies, liquors, or misc favors may be included in KFBA trade proposals…", and of course much huffing and puffing about not much of anything as is his usual want. And he calls this a game! More like an ode to central planning.

As for Ciwasko's picks I agree that if Darko is to ever post that mythical .800 I thought he had in him it will be for D'Antoni. He is, incredibly, still just 24 years of age. But at the same time, this is his 4th team and if he doesn't break through now, its just not going to happen.

Humphries remains a perennial super sleeper (whom I believe has been selected in the 11th round of the OR draft four years running). As far as I'm concerned he will stay there as long as he continues to post the juicy averages in limited minutes... but I'm afraid its going to be tough for him get rotation level playing time on a team that lists Dirk, Shawn Marrion, Josh Howard, Drew Gooden and Tim Thomas on its roster. Might be another year at the end of the bench for our favorite 6'8" KF player.

Gerald Green and Martell Webster are quintesential Ciwasko picks. Athletic wings who as uber talents have been much hyped for their potential but have not yet delivered. Two summers ago he selected Marvin Williams and Danny Granger with the 1st two picks of the 9th round. Today Granger is the best keeper in the OR and Williams is projected as an 11th rounder. Net-net, I'd say he go a good return for his investment.

And remember, in the immortal words of the Colonel:

"We’re drafting certainty – for our default draft list! If someone let their team be auto-drafted, they should expect mediocracy!"

"Varejao provides depth at forward and has a decent chance to surpass .700 - all you can ask for in the 13th round.

JRue - This late i usually go for young guys with potential. In an ideal world JRue could become the go-to scorer in Philly's second unit; he's supposed to be a selfish ballhog which bodes well for his kfba average (hello zach randolph!)

Austin Daye - He's looked surprisingly good in summer league and could post a .750 backing up Charlie and Tayshaun.

Julian Wright - Here's where desperation sets in; maybe, just maybe he has a breakout season ala Boris Diaw in him.

Ersan Ilyasova - When i picked him i thought Amir would pick up minutes at PF for Milwaukee. Now that he's gone Ersan should actually be the first big off the bench. Definetely worth a 14th round pick and will probably start for some "all keeper" teams by the end of the year.

Donte Green - Sacramento's team is worse than ever so anybody with a semblance of talent should get minutes. Donte probably won't do much with them but he'll look good waving a towel at the end of the bench. "

My take: Donte Green shot a miserable 29% from the field over the course of five games at the Vegas summer league and David Thorpe actually accused him of being the player that had most regressed from last year over his Twitter feed.

Two years removed from a .726, 941 minute rookie season, Ilyasova returns after a brief stint with FC Barcelona. The giant Turk is still just 22 years old.

The basics (again):

"...new player valuations are based on the indefetigable work of 8 veteran Kentucky Fried GMs (myself included). Drafting in a predetermined (snaked) order we would each select the best availalbe player (in our personal opinion) regardless of position... "

and...

"...selection order was was designed to optimize the various waking hours for participants across various timezones. It was as follows: ZZRay, DLBass, Doug, Colonel, BRoham, Schottsie, Ciwasko, Younggod....."

And since then I've been making fun of their efforts. Today we'll tackle rounds 10, 11 and 12....

At this point things get dicey - the 1st pick of the 10th round is the 145th player selected and as in any fantasy NBA game, all the good players are long gone. Subjectivity is high and, as it is responsible for laying down the default rankings, dangerous. I continue to contend that KF GMs tend to place WAAAAAAAY to mugh weight on the rankings defaults... Always good to remember our brains are just fried as anyone else, we just mocked the draft that counted.

Worst pick: The rookie hating colonel jumps head first into the crazy pool with the selection of Hasheem Thabeet. Yes he was the 2nd overall pick in the draft. So were Marvin Williams, Darko Milicic, Tyson Chandler and Keith Van Horn (and who wants any part of that?) Here's an 'upside" player touted for his "defensive skills" suiting up for this year's vegas fave to become the biggest circus touring the NBA. (Which incidentally is an award Z-Bo squads have picked up three years running even though he's switched teams every off-season - quite the feat). And that's without signing Iverson.

A quick look into Thabeet's sterling summer league numbers this summer:

And David Thorpe's backhanded compiments: "This much is certain: The Grizzlies knew they were getting a project when they drafted him. And although his attitude seemed positive and his demeanor on the court was professional, his effort level never came close to what it will take for him to have success in the NBA. His lack of strength, balance or scoring skills is not the issue. Give him that same set of weaknesses, but replace his passion for the games with Blake Griffin's, and Memphis would have a center who would be the envy of the entire league."

So if you're into seven footers with "tremendous upside" and "blockshotability" i suggest passing on Thabeet this early and picking up Ian Mahinmi or Saer Sene in the 14th round instead. (Also expected to be available at the tail end of your dratt: Johan Petro, Robert Swift, Patrick Obryant, Darko Milicic and yes!, Tyson Chandler).

Another terrible pick: Shelden Williams has been a perennial Broham super sleeper over the years and I'm here to tell you the jury is IN and dude just sucks. He got beat out by Zaur Pachulia and a then rookie Josh Smith back in the ATL. A little later he got schooled by a rookie Al Horford (even though Shelden had a couple of seasons of NBA experience up on him). Then he got shipped to Sacramento where he got beat out by Jason Thompson (yeah, another rookie), sophomore Steve Hawes and the artist formerly known as Mikki Moore. Brad Miller was injured for weeks and dude could not break into the rotation. Now he's playing in Boston behind Garnett, and Rasheed Wallace and Kendrik Perkins and Glen Davis and he's going to get on the court how exactly? Doing the Tonya Harding to the knee?

Other questionable picks: Tyler Hansborough was drafted sans controversy, but it seemed to me there will still rookies with more talent on the board. Yes I'm betting he'll probalby be a rotation guy in the NBA, but what kind of numbers is he going to put up realistically? In his rookie season? I actually like DeAndre Jordan (as a super sleeper not in the 10th round!) but i think minutes are going to be very hard to come by in the LAC. I see him as the 3rd big man off the bench, playing behind Griffin, Camby, Kaman and Craig Smith though not everyone agrees.

Best Pick: This was an awful, awful round. But I think that Mike Miller has some bounce-back-ability coming off a subpar year on the team the NBA (and its fans) forgot. I like that the Wizards have assembled a collection of taleted vets playing for pride. Maybe there won't be enough ball to go round, but I wouldn't be surprised to see a motivated Miller (who's been stuck in NBA purgatory for most of his NBA career) regain mid-700s form. And with Flip Saunders at the helm this might be one of those teams that gives up 112 ppg but scores a 110 (and produces a disproportionate number of KF impact players).

And here's when it happened. Schottsie upset the entire balance of the draft universe - the dreaded "draftverse collapse"! - by selecting the man with no ACLs: NBA draft pariah and Spurs 2nd round steal, DeJuan Blair.

Schottsie - "Dejuan blair"

Doug - "Hey, I don't think it makes sense from a rankings standpoint to put DeJuan Blair ahead of at least some of the guys who were drafted way ahead of him. I mean, I can certainly see someone wanting to take Blair here, but should he be ranked ahead of Earl Clark, Ty Lawson, Jordan Hill, Jeff Teague -- guys who have similar fantasy potential and were taken in the lottery or the mid-first round? "

Broham - "I think Blair is a better pick KF wise at this point than the other 1st rounders… You could argue that he doesn’t have the upside of Ricky Rubio or Demar Derozan… but he’s by far the likeliest to post 20 minutes with an .800 avg of everyone left on the board (in my opinion)…"

Doug - "Blair's also the likeliest to blow his knees out, not make it through training camp and not play a single minute in the NBA. He doesn't have ACLs! As I said, there are plenty of good reasons to take him here. I just don't think it makes sense to rank a second rounder above first rounders with comparable talent and some NBA readiness. I'm not saying we have to rank rookies according to their draft positions -- Rubio should, imo, be lower than Blair ubless we find out he's for sure playing in the NBA this year. But guys like Lawson and Clark are gonna play roles with their teams, and they were taken twenty to thirty spots ahead of Blair."

Broham - "Lest we forget… Blair was a rebounding beast in College…He only dropped to the 2nd round because of the ACLs… So I suppose the question is whether he can last a full season…

NBA Comparison: Paul Millsap/Anthony Mason

Strengths: Powerful post player with tremendous rebounding ability … Uses his wide base, long arms and soft hands to inhale every rebound in his area … Has a true NBA skill, rebounding … Particularly dangerous on the offensive glass (averaged an astounding 5.6 offensive boards per game in his sophomore year) … Big personality. Colonel - "When was Millsap drafted his rookie season? Anyway, I definitely think we should drop Blair a little… If this were a draft, and this was the spot that Schottsie took him – then our default draft ranking should have him dropped down one round or so… I’m sure there will be a few people in every League who peg him as someone they want, and have to decide at what pick to take him – so that nobody else beats them to the prize… But don’t make him out to be a sure thing prospect…"

Broham - "Hater! Certainly a not a sure thing prospect on par with the great Nesterovic!!!!"

Colonel - "We’re not drafting prospects… We’re drafting certainty – for our default draft list! If someone let their team be auto-drafted, they should expect mediocracy!"

Colonel: "FYI – Milsap (after leading the NCAA in rebounding for three straight years) was drafted with the 2nd pick of the 15th round his rookie season… (Behind Kevin Martin…) Sure, we missed the boat – but he was a 2nd round draft pick! I see Blair projected in the 13th round… And let someone take him in the 10th, 11th or 12th if they want to…"

And that my friends was that. Blair's draft position was never updated. (So all yee unsuspecting haters and naysayers beware! He might sneak up on your team sight unseen at Draft and 171st! And destroy it! Slowly and from the inside!)

But there were two important lessons to be had: Blair has no ACLs and if you let your team autodraft you should expect mediocracy.

Free Agent Alert: McCants' .749 is certainly high enough to warrant an 11th round ranking, but as of yet no team has added him to their roster. And as the old saying goes "No team, no minutes, no KF points." Caveat emptor.

Best Picks: While the rookies dominated a round that was all about "upside potential", I think Ciwasko stole the show with his dual .640 picks - Jordan Farmar and Darrell Arthur. Posting a .640 average is heresy here at the KFBA, where players are promptly delegated to the dustbin in favor of the devil rookies we don't know. But Jordan Farmar and Darrell Arthur remain talented NBA prospects in spite of last years middling averages and either could break through next season (or at least break through enough to be worth a 10th round pick up next season) and both are young enough that the slightest uptick in numbers will be considered a positive trend. Remember that player averages still owe much to their various roles. Every season is different. Every summer there are new tricks to be had. Every fall there is new confidence to be gained. And every winter there are roster altering trades. Don't hate on the .640 players, hate on their coaches and ball-hogging teammates.

Rookies: In regular drafts the rookie pot usually gets raided much earlier. If you can get a decent risk/reward guy like DeMar DeRozan, or potential NBA readies like Ty Lawson, Jeff Teague and Jordan Hill this deep, its well worth the gamble. In fact - i hereby declare any lottery pick remaining in your draft to be a decent gamble in the 12th, 13th or 14th rounds.

Sophomores: GMs tend to sleep on the 2nd year players that don't sport the gaudy averages, but many a Kentucky Fried star blossomed from humble beginnings. Of this year's projected 1st round selections: Dirk Nowitzki posted a .678 his rookie season. Danny Granger walked away with a .681, Deron Williams finished with a .658 and Tony Parker boasted a measly .588. Now there have been 100s of other rookies with crappy averages during that time span that never developed into anything worth owning in Kentucky Fried leagues... but miracles do happen.

A new selection order was implemented effective the 81st pick and was designed to optimize the various waking hours for participants across various timezones. It was as follows: ZZRay, DLBass, Doug, Colonel, BRoham, Schottsie, Ciwasko, Younggod.

With the 1st pick of the 6th round, Yao's calamitous fall down the rankings mountain finally came to an abrupt halt. Technically I made this pick on behalf of ZZRay who was MIA for several hours after he fell into a deep sleep in the middle of the afternoon. But it was the Colonel who opened the floodgates after stating he was comfortable with Yao being ranked at any point once the fifth round was over. The theory is that as a 4th round keeper, he has intrisic value and that we didn't want anyone 'autodrafting' him earlier than that. My guess is that he still goes in the 5th round in most actual drafts, but at least the selection will likely be made by a GM making a concious gamble, not as a default autopick.

With the notable exceptions of Gerald Wallace, Andre Miller and Rip Hamilton, the 6th round was clearly all about upside potential (and risk). Gone were not only the super stars, but the leading scorers and rebounders and most of the second fiddlers. Left were known veteran players with solid output and young up and comers with tantalizing potential. Clearly the up and comers won out.

Best Pick: While I like a lot of these guys here the one that sticks out to me is Scola. He's not at risk to lose minutes and I just don't see how he performs any worse than he did last season. And with Yao and TMac both likely out for the year, the team will be looking for all the scoring help it can get. Scola averaged just 12.7 ppg last year... If he raises that up to just 16-17 he could be riding a sporty .900 average all year.

Riskiest Picks: While there is much risk to go round in this round, the two that stand out to me are Javale McGee and Mareese Speights. Both performed well and earned coaching accolades in limited minutes last year. Certainly either or both could turn out to be solid NBA and KFBA players next season, but it seems they could just as easily get stuck at the back of their team's rotations. Washington's summer moves are clearly those of a team trying to win games, not one trying to develop sophomores. With Antawn Jamison, Brendan Haywood and Andray Blatche playing ahead of him, McGee could be in the sub 10min/game category and at that point does it even matter if he's putting up decent averages? Over in Philly Mareese Speights is playing behind both Elton Brand (the team's major free agent acquisition last summer) and Thaddeus Young (who continues to show better as a 4 than 3)... How does he get significant playing time unless one of them goes down?

Rookie watch: I was midly surprised to see Tyreke Evans as the second rookie drafted. (My money was on Curry, though i wouldn't take either this early). I understand that Sacramento is potentially a great place for Tyreke to break in and that he displayed solid skills in Vegas over the summer, but it doesn't seem probable that he will be the starting point guard and being the combo guy off the bench on a team filled with capable wings (Kevin Martin, Francisco Garcia) might not be the easiest position from which to post numbers. Again i understand the argument that if they give him the ball and say go make something happen (the heralded cavs offense!) he could be real solid but if he posts a .640 next year i don't think anyone will bat an eye either. And 4th round rights really require an .800+ for the keeper aspect to come into play. Just too high for me here.

The 7th round offered up an intersting mix of "all-star" players that didn't perform as well as expected (Rashard Lewis, Joe Calderon) and up and comers without the gaudy averages (Rodney Stuckey, Jeff Green).

Best Picks: Ultimately i like a lot of picks in this round but I think Jose Calderon, Luol Deng and Jason Richardson offer the best value. If you look at all three historically, they clearly underperformed last year.

Jason Richardson was not only coming off of four consecutive .800+ seasons, he seems to have performed well once Phoenix ditched their coach and decided to return to the 7 second offense of yesteryear...

After two consecutive 800+ seasons, Deng battled injuries all season and was a disappointment. But with Gordon gone, the Bulls are going to be looking for additional scoring and Luol Deng - who seems like he's been around forever - is still just an unripe 24.

Calderon clocks in a tad older than Deng at 27... but point guards who shoot 50% from the floor and distribute almost 9 assists per game are absolute treasure and there is something very special about anyone who can make 98% of their free throws. And if you don't believe in late blooming point guards i commend you to go look up Mr Steve Nash who posted a .796 (at career best at that point) at 27 years of age before becoming, you know, Steve Nash (http://www.kfba.net/kfba/WebModules/Players/Player.aspx?PlayerID=41)

Worst picks: It seems to me Martin Gortat and Hedo Turkoglu's post season performances earned them not only inflated contracts but a bump in the Kentucky Fried rankings. I hope they each bought Dwight Howard a rolex.

Most intriquing pick: Jeff Green. Overall it seems to me the guys in OKC really know what they're doing, especially when it comes to the NBA draft. I'm feeling confident Jeff Green (already a pretty good player) is going to be a solid NBA starter at the very least, for the next decade or so. While I love the player i can't be sure if it will translate into a starting caliber KF average, but sometimes good players end up with good averages . He could have a Richard Jefferson type KF career.

Best Pick: Its an absolute crime Jason Kidd fell this far and when you look at this round in isolation he stands out like Paris Hilton at a Sausage eating convention. Kidd is not only guaranteed a starting position, he's guaranteed to be a leader on that team, given the ball and asked to make plays. Last year's .749 is 100 points less than any other average he has put in a decade. And yes you could attribute that to his overall ancientness (age 36) and claim we are simply witnessing a precipitous end of career drop-off, but the stats (and Dallas' record) don't support that. What they do support is an offense that often ran through Nowitzki last year. But if you look at this offseason, when they signed Shawn Marion (who you might know excels in a certain type of offense) as well Drew Gooden and Tim Thomas, it seems to me the theme was 'running' big men who can make outside shots. Take from that what you want. My money is on one more .800+ season from Kidd and plenty of good karma for whoever drafts the old man.

Rookie Watch: Stephen Curry becomes the 3rd rookie selected from this draft class. Three rookies through eight rounds is atypical in the KFBA and i don't expect to see that replicated in real drafts where GMs are often suckered by these sexy picks. I don't know what to make of Curry at this point. He clearly has a lot of fans but he shot like crap in the summer league. Golden State is a great place to put up numbers, but you need the minutes to put up those numbers - just ask Al Harrington or anyone else thats fallen out of favor with Don Nelson - and there's just so much competion at shooting guard on that team, there's pretty much no room for suckage.

Upside potential: You can't read too much into last season's KF average. I'd rate the two sophomore guards with .680 averages considerably higher than the 26 year old journey man with the fancy .870. Eric Gordon and DJ Augustine are going to be impact NBA players for a decade. They might even make an all-star game or two. Will Bynum could be out of the NBA in 12 months.

Best Pick: I've been an Aaron Brooks fan since he played in the 1st vegas summer league two years ago (whence he posted a .941). Last season i thought he looked great in the playoffs... Though his playoff numbers only indicate an average in line with the season, i think this upcoming season is going to be the opportunity of his life. He'll be the starting point guard for a team with absolutely no scoring options (even Von Wafer's gone, after signing with Olympiakos). If he can shoot in the mid 40s and make some open threes he's going to get a ton (TON!) of shots. We'll see. I'll be rooting for him.

Rookie Watch: Two more rookies got picked up in this round and I'm a big fan of both. James Harden carries the blessing of OKC's all knowing brass and as such, I expect nothing less than another tremendous talent. Will it translate into average? That's always the gamble. But a mid .700 average with solid minutes will make him a useful player this year. Sprinkle in a handful of opposing coaching accolades and he'll have solid 7th round keeper value, perhaps even enough to be a mid-season commodity on the trade front. Over in Minnessotta they've jettisoned Randy Foye and Sebastian Telfair and a Ricky Rubio appearance this season is looking less likely by the day. They are going to hand Johnny Flynn the starting point reigns and will let him sink or swim. To be fair, Flynn has a solid two-year college career and performed admirably over the summer. It will probably be a trying season, but really how much better does he have to be to be considered an upgrade over telfair?

P Avg (pheripherals avg.) is the KF Avg with points excluded. While we have not studied this in depth, I am confident that when we do, we will find points to be the variable with the most variance in the KF equation by a significant margin. They are, of all the KF figures, by far the most depedent on role, team offense, pecking order and coaching whims. I don't see Tyreke evans scoring 20 ppg his rookie year for example, but if he can grab board every five minutes he's on the floor and dish an assist every seven and a half, he's going to be in pretty good shape.

New Rankings: Reviewing the Top 5 Rounds

As explained in the most recent rankings post, our new player valuations are based on the indefetigable work of 8 veteran Kentucky Fried GMs (myself included). Drafting in a predetermined (snaked) order we would each select the best availalbe player (in our personal opinion) regardless of position... the initial order was Schottsie, broham, Colonel, Doug, DLBass, Youngod, ZZRay, Ciwasko... (incidentally this order lasted exactly 5 rounds before we re-optimized for the various timezones represented by the volunteer rankers).

Eight days and 322 emails later we had our latest rankings.

The first 11 players were selected in exactly the same order they had been previously ranked in, proving either the infallability of the Colonels judgement (and mine) or the subconcious weight default rankings place on unsuspecting drafters.

The first surprise was Tony Parker moving up to the 12th spot. Its tough to argue against it since Parker did post a surprising .979 last season (higher than the next 4 selections), thereby leading many a team to a Kentucky Fried title matchup. The contrarian would point out that Ginobili was out for the much of the year and that Parker might have trouble replicating these numbers unless he remains one of the focal points of the offense. But there are no guarantees Ginobili will stay healthy next season (or that Timmy Duncan will for that matter) and Parker is the only one of the three entering his prime. Also the general consensus is that there is a lack of quality guards at the top of the KF scoreboard (i.e. he has a higher differential over replacement value than Durant or Stoudemire).

Kevin Durant only moved up one spot but could have easily been selected 10th (and would have if it was up Doug at that point).

Schottsie originally drafted Shaq to complete the 1st round, but since he had 1st round keeper rights to Shaq in the Original Recipe (and the unofficial rule was to stay away from your own OR keepers), the Colonel swapped him with Schottsies next pick (17th overall), Kevin Garnett.

The biggest mover in the 2nd round was Gilbert Arenas who jumped 11 spots from the preliminary rankings thanks to ZZRay... It's a high risk, high reward move. Though its tough to argue that he's riskier than GInobili and recent reports from new coach Flip Saunders suggest that Arenas is in good shape and (quoting Flip) "ready to reclaim his spot amongst the Kentucky Fried big boys".

Nobody selected in the 2nd round dropped more than a couple of spots from their previous rankings (thanks to a couple of preliminary 3rd rounders sneaking in, and perhaps again, to the powerful weight awarded to default rankings, no matter how whimsical).

The biggest climber in the 3rd round was Michael Beasly (who escalated 9 positions from his previous spot). Tough to argue against the call... Beasly did post a beastly .876 in his rookie season and wasn't even that good (trust me i watched a bunch of MIA games and dude looked lost about half the time he was out there). But coming into year 2 he now has a little more experience under his belt (at least i hope) and is playing for a team that desperatly needs some offensive help for Dwyane Wade and is determined not to bring in anyone that could sabotage their 2010 salary cap clearing efforts. He's going to have every opportunity in the world to turn into a star next season. Still a risky bet.

Best Pick: Baron Davis... Yes he is a malcontent, injury-prone whiner, playing for the worst franchise in sports, in the most distracting city in the country, for what is by all accounts a terrible coach that he does not get along with. But there is considerable upside here. Baron is easily motivated when he's playing on a winning team (and by winning i mean .500 with a shot at the playoffs, which the Clippers should be, and probably should have been last year). And his averages, historically, suggest last season's production was an anomoly, not the norm:

Worst pick: Stephen Jackson. Conversly, the numbers Stephen Jackson put up last season are completely out of or porportion with his mid .700 historical averages. And yes he is a ball hog on a run and gun team playing 4 positions for a mad-scientist scoring-obsessed coach... but last year Monta Ellis and Corey Magette missed considerable parts of the season. This year they've added Stephen Curry (out of whom much appears to be expected) and they still have a sea of D-league and 2nd round finds (Kelenna Azuibuike, Anthony Morrow) and developing 1st round talent (Anthony Randolph, Brandan Wright and Monta) waiting around to take his spot (and shots).

Blake Griffin is clearly the biggest jumper of the mock draft through the first 4 rounds. Perhaps rightly so, as the Colonel and I tend to undervalue rookies. Schottsie's thinking behind the pick is that if you have the 1st selection of the 4th round, you can't pass on this potential 2nd rounder keeper for next season. And really what's the downside? Low 800 production? The kid is big and strong and is going to be a rebounding force in the National Basketball Association for years to come (i dare you to doubt me!). He demonstrated a high basketball IQ during the summer league and the Clippers, fully understanding that the future of their franchise rests on his shoulders, will be looking to fast track his development and will FORCE FEED him the ball like a starving bastard child. If a knucklehead like Beasly can milk an .867 out of Miami, I can't imagine what a true talent like Griffin might be able to do in the LAC.

Best pick: Doug knows what he's doing and i think Brook Lopez is just a great selection here. He's going to be a really good NBA player and as a rebounding, low post scoring big man, thats going to equate to some delicous KF averages. For his rookie season he grabbed 8 boards/game, in just 30 minutes, and shot 79% from the line to go along with a healthy 53% from the field. His average rose throughout the season to boot (just .757 in the 1st half) and with Vince Carter gone, the swampies are going to be desperate for scoring (capital D desperate! Yi Yianlin? Bobby Simmons? Josh Boone? You must be kidding). I fully expect that offense to be a two man game played off of Devin Harris and Brook Lopez and if Lopez doesn't parlay that into a .900 I'll be midly surprised...

The biggest riser in the 5th was Ramon Sessions (jumping 11 spots).... While his average certainly justifies being drafted above his roundmates and the possibility of playing in Mike D"Antoni's offense is certainly appetizing, i feel like there might be a little bit of fools gold to him. I've been a fan, but now we're drafting a guy that wasn't able to beat Luke Ridnour out of the staring point guard job and that teams aren't exactly coming after guns ablaze, offering 50m, 5 yr contracts to, in the 5th round? Ridnour and his .691 went completely undrafted (and he ended up placed a 291). Not saying the averages are comparable, just that what we're enfatuated with here is possibility not certifiable talent. To put it another way, Jason Kidd wasn't drafted until the 8th round.

Worst Pick: Drew Gooden. Yes he's a reliable .800, but dude is playing backup to Dirk Nowitzki, Shawn Marion and Josh Howard... I think you have to have some reasonable level of confidence your 5th round selection is going to get minutes. While we're ragging on the Colonel, jury's certainly still out on Iverson as well, who as of this moment has no team to call his own.

Rethinking the top 25

Just two weeks after the Colonel and I mocked up our first set of player rankings for next season, its already time to start reviewing our top 25....

The biggest mover hands down has to be Yao Ming, who is not only almost definitely sidelined for all of next season, but might also be calling it a career. The situation is so severe that he is apparently considering having what we have just learned is the "Ilguaskas" where they "lower the arch on your foot"... and while that worked out for Ilgauskas in the end, if i recall correctly it took him a couple of seasons to be fully healed.

So any team drafting him this year is looking at either:

A) Being able to play him at the end of next season, if he were to come back.

B) Keeping him next season

I find the first to be unlikley - its not like anyone's really expecting Yao to be a fast healer - and of poor value in the event he returns anyway. If he makes it back for say the last month of the season, that coincides with the 2nd and 3rd round of KF playoffs... so you'd have to not only make the playoffs, but likely win your 1st round match-up without him (and without ANY contribution from the slot used to draft him from), only to face a most serious ball check of whether you're willing to gamble on an untested center returning from a season long absence on what would apparently be a pretty decent team. I just don't see it.

For those thinking of the second I have two words: Elton Brand. A popular 4th rounder back in the summer of '07, there was many a 2nd rounder sacrificed last year for this services and guess what? He sucked and was then out for the year and none of the teams that kept him ended up making serious playoff runs.

And what we're hearing about the injury's code orange threat level to Yao's career is unlike anything that ever came out concerning Brand. Can you imagine anyone giving a Yao a max 5 year deal next summer?

Where does this leave us? I think Yao is a 5th rounder at best and i probably wouldn't touch him personally until the 6th... for now we'll split the difference and place him in the 72nd slot (one spot behind fellow injured Rocket superstar T-Mac), bumping everyone above him a spot and sneaking Andrew Bynum into the 25th overall place.

And what about the rest of the top 25?

Well I'm still real confident about the Big Six of LeBron, Wade, Dwight Howard, Chris Paul, Kobe and Duncan. No matter how I look it at, when you break it down by supporting casts, injury risk, position and upside potential, I always come up with these six in that same order. And in fact did before the Colonel and I proceeded to match it exactly when we drafted. The only I way I see people really deviating from this is based on personal preferences or drafting for position needs on teams with solid keepers. (If I got two solid Guards then yeah it would probably make sense to take Dwight. Except that I love Wade so i'd say screw it and take him anyway.)

The 7th spot on the other hand is wide open and I think an argument could be made for Melo, Danny Granger (who interestingly is a year older than Melo), Dirk Diggler, Al Jefferson (if the reports are good and you happen to value the "C" perched alongside his name), Kevin Durant (really skies the limit at this point right?) and of course Amare Stoudemire (who is just one season removed from a ridonkulous 1.157).

For now I see no reason to change our intial draft order of Melo (7), Dirk (8) and AJ (9).

But the Shaq trade leaves Amare as the sole big man scorer on the Suns and I'd expect to see them return to high scoring, highly succesful Nash-Amare pick n' rolls of yesteryear. And if somehow a trade to Don Nelson's Warriors does materialize it could get really crazy.

Definitely seems a better upside selection to me at 10 than Granger or Bosh, and its not like Bosh or Granger aren't injury risks either.

I think the case can also be made for taking Kevin Durant over Granger and Bosh. (And it goes like this: Rookie season posted .851 on 20 ppg, as Soph posted .943 on 25 ppg... is there any way he doesn't A) score 30 per and B) post four digits next season? Yeah I don't see how).

But for now I'm comfortable leaving those three as is after upping Amare to the 10 spot.

Two other movers this early on (in my most humble opinion), are Shaq and Zach Randolph...

As you can see in my quick Memphis analysis here (http://kfba.net/cs/blogs/broham/archive/2009/07/02/are-there-enough-shots-in-memphis.aspx) i'm projecting Zach to hit somewhere between .900 and .920... (though if they sign Iverson all bets are off). And given his general Malcontendedness I don't see that .920 projecting into an 18th overall ranking... Instead I'm dropping him six spots to 24 and placing the ex-Clipper in a delicious Laker sandwich...

When we mock drafted the rankings, I figured Shaq would get his no matter where he went... but now that the trade to the Cavs is official I find myself questioning whether he can really post 4 digits along LeBron. Note that the no supporting Cavalier posted a .900 last season. The lone .800 was Zydrunas (a spot up shooter) and the lone .700 was Mo Williams (another spot up shooter).

So yes maybe Shaq only plays 20 per and maybe LeBron does feed him in the post like a starving bastard child... but maybe he only posts a .900... and maybe he's 37.... and maybe there's 20,000 minutes of NBA basketball on those knees.

Regardless I'm pushing him down below Devin Harris and Brandon Roy. Both are young, heading into their prime, and the primary offensive weapons on their respective teams. (In fact the VC trade could help push Harris' avg even futher north.) And lets not forget both would be fun to watch and root for.

Are there enough shots in Memphis?

With the recent acquisition of Zach Randolph, whether there are enough shots to go around in Memphis seems a most relevant question - as does what the KF Avgs. of the rotation players might look like.

A quick reconstruction of the projected Starting 5 in memphis (at this juncture) with last year's KF Averages and mpg....

PG - Mike Conley....... 0.656 avg., 30.0 mpg

SG - OJ Mayo............. 0.712 avg., 37.5 mpg

SF - Rudy Gay........... 0.763 avg., 36.7 mpg

PF - Zach Randolph...... 0.986 avg., 34.6 mpg

C - Marc Gasol............. 0.760 avg., 30.1 mpg

....and the likely rotation players....

F - Hakim Warrick........ 0.759 avg., 24.3 mpg

F - Darrell Arthur......... 0.645 avg., 17.6 mpg

G - Quentin Ross..... 0.429 avg., 16.7 mpg

....reveals both good and bad news. First, the team is loaded with non-shot happy, role players from Mike Conley and Gasol as the likely starting Point Guard and Center to guys that act like their not even part of the offense like Ross, Buckner and Thabeet, coming off the bench. But of course they had these players (with the exception of Thabeet) last season and the offense initiating OJ Mayo only managed a paltry .712 playing next to them. In fact, the only players to post averages above .800 were Hamed Haddadi and Chris Mihm, and they played a grand total of 111 and 96 minutes respectively for the season.

What then, depressed Memphis averages so?

For one thing they ranked second to last in the league in ppg with a measly 93.9 per game (Only Charlotte under Larry Brown's stifling offense scored less).... and they were last in shots per game at a lowly 77.

For another (likely in part due to their low shot totals) they were dead last in team Rebounds per game at 38.8 per game.

And then they were also dead last in Assists per game.... their 17.4 apg, two full assists lower than the 29th placed Magic.

They fared better on the lowest components of the KF Avg, ranking 9th overall in steals per game (7.5/g) and 18th in blocks (4.7/g).

Giving the team a grand total KFP per game score of 162.3, that was by far the worst in the NBA, and yielding a collective average of just .676 (assuming not one single overtime played). Yuck!

The only stat where Memphis outpaced their peers was Turnovers... sadly that does not directly contribute to the KF average, but it does reduce shots, which reduces points scored, and hence possible assists and rebound opportunities.

I do think Randolph will help them score more points and grab more boards. Gasol and Randolph should be an at least above average front court in boards per game. With Thabeet and Arthur they have a couple of nice young bigs coming off the bench to pitch in.

One would expect OJ Mayo to naturally progress in his second season, with better shot selection and reduced turnovers. Also Randolph's post game should open up more shots on the perimeter. Conley has to do be better (he just HAS to).

So perhaps Memphis won't be dead last in the three main KF categories next season... maybe they'll be like 25ish...

Rudy Gay matches last season (.763), with a 50/50 shot he gets traded mid year.

Q-Ross and Greg Bucker will combine for 25+ minutes a game.

Thabeet posts a sub .500 average...

Darrell Arthur continues to show flashes and posts a .750ish average in very limited minutes.

Hakim Warrik (or his replacement) posts a .600.

And the team total KFP increases to 175 per game for a .720s team average!

With the NBA draft fast approaching, it was time to get our 1st round of 2009/10 K - F - B - A playa rankings uploaded.... Player rankings and Draft Boards are key to turning on offseason keeper/pick trading, lest some eager GM make bad decisions based on yesterday's news. We all know its always best to make bad decisions based on tommorrows faulty projections.

Player Ranking has always been a tricky and highly subject endeavor in any fantasy sport and, most fortunately, Kentucky Fried Basketball has been no exception.

From its incredibly pure origins, where the previous season's KF Average was sorted in descending order and Zarko Varda could end up as the 8th ranked player...

To all the good times we've the last few seasons courtesy of gracious volunteers in mock drafts looking to "pimp" the rankings of their keeper wares (or, on occasion, believing their own hype - I'm talking to you Amir Johson!)

In keeping with the glorious KFBA spirit of imperfection the Colonel and I decided to try something a little different this year.

Namely we made a game out of it and put some dough on the line.

The rules were as follows. Each of us would select 50 players. The colonel went first and we alternated throughout.

Our score at the end of season will be the Sum of the KF Averages of our highest 40 performers. Any player that does not pay a min of 1000 minutes is disqualified.

Top score wins.

Positions do not matter.

The Colonel picked 1st and is represented by odd numbers. I am the evens.

After drafting the first 100, we took 20 more and then ranked the remaining players based on last season's KFAvg * Minutes Played in decending order.

This was before last week's draft, but all projected rookies were available. Only Blake Griffin was selected (at #71).

Andrew f'ing Bynum posts a surprising 1.302 on the week handing Mattg's Berlin Cab Crew top honors for the week and returning the Chicago Pimps to the top scores.

The Pimps who have now placed in the top 10 a whopping 5 times this season are only 6-3 in spite of a 216 ppg average that leads the Cowbell. (Though in fact the Shivan dragons - who sport a 215 per game average and are also 6-3 in the same league - come close)

Connie Hawkins, Reno911!, the Clockwork Beasts, Peal City Earls, and Hypnotic Specters all make repeat appearances.

Trantony lands two top 10 teams.
