He's been taking pot shots at Phil Jackson again.  At the Knicks game he knocked Phil Jackson a few notches below Larry Brown, cause Jackson always "picks his spots" and Larry Brown takes bad teams and makes them better.  Not doubt Phil Jackson has coached some of the most talented teams of the last 15 years, but the claim rings more hollow than in years past - I mean has Auerbach seen this year's lakers?  They're goal is the playoffs and they have zero chance at a title.

How many bad teams did Red get a chance to coach anyway?

old post, but auerbach coached plenty of bad to mediocre teams.  jackson's not coaching a bad team anyway, just a mediocre one.

before auerbach made a courageous trade to land bill russell in 1957 and also draft tom heinsohn in the same draft, the celtics had very mediocre teams from 1953 (which is i think when auerbach took over as celtics coach) to 1956.

but like how jackson benefitted greatly from jordan's presence and being able to relate to him well, auerbach benefitted greatly from having one of the greatest individual players ever in russell and being able to relate to him and get maximum production out of him.

i admit - i can't disagree with auerbach's claims in the least regarding jackson and brown.
