Broham's comment on Kevin Martin (13) for 4-1, made me think (again) about the question of trading high draft picks for keepers.

I'm going to list a few keepers.  Hopefully, we can get some thoughts on what a fair trade would be.  For simplicity, I'd say one pic, straight up, for the keeper.  Thoughts on the impact of different keeper rounds (beyond the obvious) would be cool too.  I'm also going to look for some trades that actually happened.

Obvious place to start
K Martin (13)
Millsap (13)
Calderon (13)
Barnes (13)
C. Smith (13)
Marcus Williams (10)
Ford (10), (8)
Mo Williams (10)
D. Williams (9)
Barbosa (9)
G. Wallace (8)
West (8)
Thomas (7)
Lee (7)
Josh Smith (6)

None of these is necessarily to praise or criticize either party to a trade (although I might).  It's just research.

This one's tricky, because the 5th rounder adds value for the team getting Biedrins.  So he wasn't actually traded for pick 33.

Connie Hawkins at Holcombe Rucker Park
KeepersPos
Andris Biedrins (9)F
Draft Picks
Overall Pick # 69 (Round 5, Pick 5)

Kentucky Colonels

How about my 5th rounder and the rights to Biedrins?

Again, this one's complicated by the fact that I got pick 64 in the package.  So I didn't actually trade #29 for Barbosa.

Glasgow Eagles
Draft Picks
Overall Pick # 29 (Round 2, Pick 13)
Overall Pick # 120 (Round 8, Pick 8)
Overall Pick # 149 (Round 10, Pick 5)

Occam`s Razor
KeepersPos
Leandrinho Barbosa (9)G
Draft Picks
Overall Pick # 64 (Round 4, Pick 16)
Overall Pick # 130 (Round 9, Pick 2)
Overall Pick # 154 (Round 10, Pick 10)
Status: Accepted (8/16/2007)

All I can tell you is that in the OR I had no keepers and bad draft position from my win last year.  When I look at Ciwasko and Broham, I think the chances of me winning the league are slim.  I was essentially making some early offers of stars for keeperts....none of which were accepted.  I offered the following:

16th pick for Josh Smith (6)
3(16) for Martin (13) and Millsap (13)

There were some others.  Honestly I would not have taken the Smith trade if I were Ciwasko.  Smith has potential to be a 1st rounder by the end of this year.  I would have taken the Martin trade however if I was Broham.  I think KMart will probably not end up being a starting guard come play-off time and he could have upgraded with the trade.  Lot of potential to give up.

Generally speaking offering a draft pick a round above where the keeper should go for the keeper is reasonable.

Ultimately everything is subjective and I would only dub trades unfair if there was a clear lack of understanding concerning rules/value on one of the parties part.

Well, I basically offered 57 for Barbosa (9) and he countered with 33 for him.  Neither went through.
